I have a '05 F150 crew cab lariat 4x4. This just started yesterday. I have used auto lamps since I bought it. When it is dark outside the only hing that will come on is my parking lights and fog lights if I have the switch pulled out, but NO headlights. the only way I can get the headlights on is to manually turn them on. I have checked all fuses and can hear the relay engaging when I put a hat over the sensor, but no headlights? Anyone have any ideas of what it could be.
BigFT - I reply - because as you see I nary heard a cricket from back in '08 on my post - I was surprised I remembered login credentials.
I located the problem in the wiring harness that runs on the drivers side kick panel and run in the channel under the cheap plastic door seal step area. It also holds the edge of the carpet down and can be gingerly popped up to expose the wire harness.
Basically started poking and moving the wires around with a ball cap over the sensor on the dash to see if I could get the light to activate as they used to - and they did. I isolated the wire area, cut and soldered and taped up a new section and all has been well since.
Funny thing was I was pissed one evening that the stopped working and had a tad of controlled rage, kicked the side panel while driving in anger, and my lights went back on!
Best-o-luck BFT! That was my 5 minute check in and back out. Maybe I will check back when information is spewing about the redesigned Raptor?! My 'ole girl needs to retire.
Adios
Thanks, YR. It must be more than a co-incidence that you would check-in on such an old post. I just posted my problem in the forum before I rechecked yours. I took your advice and pulled the kick panel and the one above with the vent duct to the door. This gave me access to the harness and the switch. I jerked around on the harness but no success. I'll get my volt meter to check the switch. I'll keep you updated.
YR, here's an update. I isolated the problem to the BSM. Everything else controlled by the BSM seems to be working so I'm not going to replace it at this time. Also, a few nights ago I switched to the autolamp position and Lo! and Behold! the headlights worked! However, I don't trust the autolamp function now so it's manual headlights from now on.
Problem was traced to the connector on the module (I forgot the name of it) located behind the driver side passenger seat wall.
The module contains a relay that runs power in parallel with the manual switch. The dumb thing is, it runs power from the front to the back and then back out to the front headlights. The harness-end of my connector pin appears be undersized or not make a good tight connection to handle the current, so it heated up and melted the connector assembly over time.
I haven't been able to fix it yet since I haven't been able to find a replacement connector pin, so I have to use manual. If any of you guys know where to find one, please let me know.
