I have what is presumed to be a 352 swapped into a 73 4x4. It has headers and what looks to me like a carter afb. I ran a compression test on all cylinders. The lowest cyl. was 154psig. and the highest was 169psig. I was amazed the compression was that good? The thing smokes out the tailpipes like crazy, real annoying to me. I put a mech oil pressure gauge in too, very low pressure at idle when the engine was warm. It was about 5psig. At 1200 rpms the pressure was at 20psig.
I set the dwell to to 29 degrees, I didnt know the proper angle? I found autolite 124 plugs in it. Tomorrow I will replace the oil with straight 40wt. The plugs are being replaced with autolite 85 plugs, along with new wires. The cap and rotor appear to recently replaced so they will stay as is for now.
Fe FAQ leads me to believe there are oiling problems, but the mods suggested do not indicate the problem in my peabrain.
Is there something else I should check out that is simple for the home garage guy with decent tools?
First make sure the smoke is oil and not coolant. If it has an automatic make sure that it is not sucking ATF thru the vacuum modulator. When you pull the plugs look at them to see if any or all are dicolored like it is burning oil. Most service manuals have pictures of how to diagnose the looks of a plug.
Np-435 so we can rule out ATF. Could water enter the exhaust stream even with the compression readings I got? It would have to come through the head in a crack or bad head gasket. Is this correct. The smoke was worse on cyls 1-4. I think I would call the smoke blue?
I replaced the ignition parts and changed the oil. The oil pressure rose as expected and the engine runs much smoother. Still smokes more than I like. Still seems to be from the 1-4 bank.
Tried a road test tonight, but the bell or pot joint on the end of the steering shaft needs repaired so the drive was cut short.
The aftermarket replacement shaft for the steering shaft is not cheap any more. Ford stop using those little upper u-joints unless you can get lucky. and someone has a good one for sale.. they were about $300 the last time I saw them going for..my 2cents
orich
As above, (I agree with the other guys), however here's a couple more checks:
Try disconnecting your PCV line and see if the smoking stops. Maybe a new PCV valve is req'd. (My manifold only allows PCV fumes into 1-4 bank)
If it doesn't, check the plugs for oily ones. Try disconencting the wires for those (oily) sparkplugs (assuming it's only one or two) and see if the smoking stops. In that case, you may have a leaking intake manifold gasket.
