Oil pressure gauge problem
If not go to the temp sending unit connector and check that.
But since the grounding out didn't peg the needle,I would think the Gauge is bad.
Gauges go bad all the time.
If you find pulsing electrical current in the connector:
I would think either the Gauge is bad or the sending unit is for a idiot light not a gauge There is a difference.

Well if all the other guages appear ok for their readings I would rule out the instrument voltage regulator. It very well could be a sticky guage, but first remove the connector on the back of the instrument panel and clean it. Then make sure it is seated tightly in the panel, same results and it sure sounds like the guage is failing.
Oh yeah you would know if you installed the wrong sending unit
If you put an idiot light sensor in a guage sytem as soon as the you turn the key on the guage will peg. Then when the oil pressure builds up the guage will drop to zero. Just another note if you put a guage sensor in an idiot light system the light will come on then change brightness as the oil pressure builds up. Of course I have never done this
that is just a theroy of mine.Sparky
