Big 10 put on wrong tires!!

I had my 2000 4x4 Expedition XLT fitted with new Michelin XLT tires today. I went and picked it up, drove it home and noticed that they are 265-70-16!!! Aren't they supposed to be 255-70-16??? I am wondering if I should just keep them or go back and complain??? Seeing how my Expe has 3.53 gears and I tow a 6000lb travel trailer, my gut tells me to go back and get the 255-70-16 like it calls for? Any and all suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Is there such a thing as 3.53 gears or do you mean 3.55, and I think 265/70 are stock size tire, Both mine have 17" and are 265/70/17

Oops! Yes, I meant to type 3.55 gears. But my tires were 255-60-16. Wouldn't the smaller tires be better for towing?

Ok. I have now confirmed that my tires that Bog 10 took off were 255-70-16, and I have also confirmed that 255-70-16 is OEM spec for this vehicle. Seeing how I tow the travel trailer, should I ask Big 10 to correct their mistake and put the smaller tires on, or will the difference be negligible?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Thanks.<o></o>

I would ask them to check the tire circumference and rpm's. Although there should be a difference (10% height), each mfg varies a little and they can compare to the tires they removed...you might find out they are closer, if not, well, I would have them changed.

You can see the difference for yourself by entering both tire sizes into this comparison calculator.

Here is another tire calculator Tire size calculator

I wouldn't worry about it myself, The size difference is very minimal, However it's YOUR vehicle & if this bothers you then I would make them put the other size on. That really is the bottom line here. You are the customer with the $$$.

The diameter of the 265's is about 1/2" larger than the 255's, making for a difference of 1.8% in gearing, speedo error, etc. This means when your speedo is reading 100 mph, you're really going 101.8 mph (assuming the speedo is accurate). Alternatively, it's like changing the axle from 3.55 to 3.49.

I'd probably prefer the slightly wider tire myself, but if your truck is *really* straining when you tow, take it back and get the 255's.

Thanks George! My "back-of-the-napkin" calculations show .5" diameter difference as well. My truck does not strain on the flats, but the TN hills north of here sure put a hurtin on the old gal when she's towing. I think I'll have Big 10 put the 255s on. My next challenge is getting them to do it! I distinctly remember asking him to put the OEM spec tires on the Expe, but I can't prove anything. Do you think they will be able to take the 265s off, now with ~20 miles on them, and sell them to someone else?

They prolly won't be able to sell them as new, but should be able to mark them down a bit, put them on the floor, and sell them as takeoffs. I once utilized a Firestone 30-day money back guarantee (got some Destination A/T's for my van, and lost a LOT of gas mileage, took them back).

The tires had a few hundred miles on them, and I remember seeing them on the dealer's floor in a stack, with a slightly reduced price. If they're a common size, should not be hard for the dealer to sell.

If you paid for the tires with a charge card and the tire dealer gives you crap, you could always cut off the money via the charge card company and put yourself into a better bargaining position. But if you find a manager who understands gearing and tire size, I would hope that he/she would understand your legitimate concern about losing a bit of towing power.

George
