I have a 1990 e150 with an apaernt 100amp alt. the problem is that it was driveing fine then it started over charging then undercharging. I found 3 voltage regulars that the pervous owner purchased and they are the standard regulator for this vehical but not for the 100 amp alt. do i need a different regulator. should i just convert it over to a one wire system? what is involved with doing that .. one last question the blower moter only works on high and i traced the problem down to the blower motor resistor pack but i can not find one to purchase anywhere. do you knwowhere i can buy one. thanks
I've had many an alternator tested/repaired/rebuilt locally over the years that gave great service. Lately though with the "Discount China Made Parts Houses" selling such cheep crappy rebuilds all of the locals have closed. You should try to find a good locally owned parts store that will test/repair/rebuild/replace with US Made parts. Unless you want to do all the labor over in a few months.
The blower parts are probably going to have to come from Ford. At least the thats where I ended up getting the same parts for my 92 E-350.
Thank you for the information.. I wound up purchaseing an a replacement alternator and it turned out that the one that was in the van was a 300amp unit and the voltage reg that they had in it was a 65amp unit.. that is probalby where my problems came from. since i have replaced the parts it is running better. about 5 days after the new parts where installed i ran into one problem that has not repeated yet but it concerned me.. I know the new parts are good and i had them tested just to make sure but the problem is that the van started to over charge again but it only did this for about 60 sec. and has not done it again. i know it was over charging because all the guages peged at the high end every one of them except the charge gauge that is not working. but it quickly went back to normal. As to the chargeing gauge i cant find how it is connected and where the wires go or how it is supposed to be connected . by checking the gauge at the dash board with the wireing harness unpluged i was able to determin that the gauge is working but it is aparently not hooked up correctly or there is a broken wire. where can i find a wireing diagram for this circute ? or does anybody have any ideas. it is driveing me nuts . thanks
Have had "over charging for 60 seconds" problem myself in the past. Never resolved the problem but it eventually quit on its own.
Hope you were able to salvage the 300amp alternator. Those are the good ones and well worth rebuilding.
Try hooking up an after market under-dash volt-meter. Next time the gauges peg give it a quick check.
