Rear Tank issue

Well this morning I started my 95 psd, and it was missing a little, so I eased up the driveway to notice that it was sputtering pretty good. I took off down the road and it seemed to clear up a little. About 2 miles later I took off out of a stop light and it sputtered a little and cut off. So I assumed it was the fuel filter so I changed it, and in the process switched it to the front tank (the rear was down to about 1/16th of a tank). It fired up and I drove away. Down the road a little ways I switched it back to the rear tank, at that time it began to studder again, so I switched it back to the front and it is fine.

Have yall ever encountered this issue before? I am just to busy at work to spend to much time diagnosing this problem.

Maybe the sender in the back tank is not working correctly and there is less fuel than you think.

2X What he said. Add some fuel to the rear tank and see if it still does it.

there is a plastic thing with a screen on the end of the pickup tube inside the fuel tank. they eventually get brittle and break off for no reason. so there is still fuel in there, but u cant get to it. the problem will get worse and worse and eventually it will do this at 1/4 tank instead of 1/8 or 1/16. and trust me its frustrating when both tanks get like that. its the ford gremlins starting to show up in your truck! be careful they will get you

I believe that when the sender goes out it will read full. You defiantly need to make sure that there is fuel in the tank and if thats not the problem you might have a clogged line or a switch that is not working.

X2 on the little screen pick up thing breaking off. Happened to my '97 last year. Ford would not sell me just the screen deal, so I pulled the sending unit and put a piece of hose on the end of the pick up tube, can't remember exactly how long of a piece of hose I put on there, about 2 or 3 inches long I think.

That may not be the best fix, but at least I can use all of my fuel now.

FYI: The sending unit on the rear tank is a piece of cake to take out.

I had that problem on my 88 Ford, the front tank suction line broke off about halfway some kind of way, so at a half a tank it would die. It drove me crazy, I couldn't figure it out, the fuel gauge hadn't worked for a while so I went ahead and replaced the hole sending unit.

I'm a little confused by what is being said about the filter on the pick up line in the tank referred to in some circles as a "Sock"

Unless it is laying on the bottom of the tank I don't understand how it would interfere with reaching all of the fuel should it separate (break off) from the pick up tube. All socks that I have run across are fine mesh screens and they do get plugged if you have crap in the tank (s).

If you have a 2" sock in length and the bottom end of it rests on the bottom of the tank,(or very close) that is all of the fuel your going to get as it will start sucking air as soon as the fuel level drops below the top of the screen of the sock.

In all fairness I have never seen the OBS fuel pick up sock and if may very well be different on a gasser.

Just my two (2) bucks worth.

Rog here is a picture of the rear tank sender with the foot. The metal tube only goes into this about 1/2 inch. So it the foot breaks off it shortens the fuel pickup by and inch or two.

X2. My truck has done this for about two years now. I just run the rear tank till it show 1/4 full and switch to the front.

I'm going with what these guys are saying.

Pull it out, it comes out easy.

I just wish i could figure out why my gass truck does the same thing he's talking about.
But mine has no issues with what you guys are refering too with my new sending unit in there. haha
Just sputters on the throttle sometimes. =\
But, uh, this is the wrong forum for that.

The bypass valve can also be a problem.
It can leak air into the system.
