The bypass valve can also be a problem.
It can leak air into the system.
Bill
X2 this can be as well I seen a 94.5 have this problem and for some reason the water in fuel light would come on at the same time we changed the bypass and it stopped.
Thanks Tim, that is a wee bit different from what I have worked on in the past.
If you encounter a broken sock on one of our tanks couldn't a piece of fuel resistant nose and a different type of sock be clamped to the hose and just let it lay on the bottom of the tank?

My truck does the same thing....definitely sounds like the sender is broken. I can only go to about 1/8 to 1/4 on my rear tank, but I can well down to the E line with the front tank. For now I am living with it....I just figure I have about 32 gallons in fuel total instead of 36 (or whatever it is).
But if I decide to pull it and put a new one in....does the tank actually have to be dropped or is there enough room under there to pull it off the top?
You have to drop the tank to replace the sending/pickup unit. Not enoough room above them. Good news is that it does not have to come all of the way out, just undo the hangers, rollover valve, fuel lines and electrical connector and let the tank hang down on one side to do the replace.
So what is this part actually called....part number, price, and a web link of where to buy would be appreciated. I searched fuel sending unit but all I find is the acutual sender part that attacheds to the rest of the unit.

1997 18 gal aft axle steel tank F6TZ9275DA need more info to get exact part number for your truck.
My truck is a 1994.5 PSD F350 dually. Every which way I search, only comes up with the sending unit (the part that works the guage) not the actual pick-up piece that it is attached to.
