It is my understanding that you don't need to double clutch if your either have syncros, or if they are working OK. If you don't have them, you do need to DC. Basically you are just allowing the gear clusters to spin roughly the same.
If you have the four speed tranny in your truck you will have to double clutch. If your transmission is worn, I suppose you'll still have to double clutch.
I have the four speed in my '49 F-2 and once I've driven it a while I can shift without double clutching just by listening to the engine. I don't not double clutch that often, I don't like to take a chance of grinding gears any more than I have to.
