No one has mentioned that it MAY be the anode rod in your HW tank. You didn't say what brand your HW heater is, but if the anode rod has been depleted, it's time for a new one. First indication that an anode rod is gone, is the SMELL!!!

Your right I never thought about that . None of mine ever had one.
Does a gas only hot water heater have an anode rod? I'm just curious, cause I dunno. I had stinky water (ammonia smell) and would've never thought of that. It's well outside my area of knowledge.
You can tell by simply pulling the drain plug...the anode (if equipped) is part of that drain plug...if it is depleted...there will be some tell tale sign.
Atwood water heaters like I have simply have a nylon drain plug. Suburban water heaters have the anode rod as part of the plug (if I have the brands correct and not switched).
Have you ever drained your water heater and was there a longish (like 7-8") rod attached to the plug?
We had the same smell on a trip a couple of weeks ago. Turned out I had forgotten to drain the water heater from the previous trip. I usually do it after every trip. After I drained it and got fresh water in the heater the problem was gone. I' sure this is the problem.
