HFCM drain plug

I just put my new drain plug in today that does not require a allen wrench, all you have to do is unscrew it by hand to drain the water out.I had about 6 or 8 oz.of what looked like water but smelled like power serve drain out.It was clear like water but had the distinct oder of the supplament. Is this normal?

Same here. I have gotten 3 to 4 cups of water out of mine, and that unit doesn't look like it could hold much more than that. My WIF light has never came on.

deadbear.

Go to your local International Dealer

2589259C91 - replacement HFCM drain plug about $16.00

Your local Ford dealer may have it or can order it, usually costs more than at the International Dealer. Ford uses it standard in there medium duty LCF trucks.

Hope this helps

I doubt very much that either one of you drained any water out of you HFCM, when you opened the drain plug. Drain your HFCM for about 25-30 seconds in to a container you will get 2-4 cups of diesel fuel (diesel fuel is basically clear with a slight yellowish tint). Then let your container stand for a minute and look at the fluid in it. Any sediment will be at the bottom and diesel fuel in the middle with any water at all floating on the surface. Unless you got some really bad fuel there will be little to no water drops floating on the top of the diesel fuel. The liquid you drain out of the HFCM should smell like diesel fuel and any additive you use since most if not all of what is coming out of the HFCM drain is fuel.

Hope this helps

Yep... well stated and true.

In 92,000 miles, my WIF light has never come on. I only drain the HFCM before changing my fuel filters every 15,000 miles. I never even check or see if any water is in there... but hey, I just use my oil drain pan and hold it up over shoulders and let it drain away.

FYI - Always drain the HFCM before replacing the filter. Replacing the filter only does not drain the "lowest section" of the HFCM housing.

15 - 30 seconds it drains then stops (just do on level ground).

Open up rear cap, replace filter and your good to go.

Replace small filter on top of motor (may need a syringe to suck out fuel in housing) and your good to go. Make sure fresh oil is used to well lube the o-rings on both filters (not diesel fuel).

In my gallery are pictures of the revised HFCM drain plug (look under fuel filters and fuel stuff in my gallery).

You are correct. I had the same thing in mind when I changed my filters last week. I got about 2 cups of product out of the drain valve. I used a clean, clear bottle to catch it. I let it sit in the garage for 5 days, then checked it. There is no seperation. It is 100% diesel and PS. Thanks for the suggestion.

But, I always though petroleum floated on top of water, and that was why there are oil fires on top of the seas when there is a spill of some type. Is that not true? Shouldn't the water settle to the bottom of a container?

I doubt you had water.
If you get water in the injectors you would know it in no time flat.
The 6.0 is very unforgiving with water.

yes the water will settle on the bottom its denser than diesel...you can use a few ounces of each in a bottle then you'll know what to look for when you see it...thats what I did when i thought I had water in my fuel...turns out I didn't there was a TSB on the HFCM.

You are correct, i was tired when i typed that last night, the fuel will float on top of the water. Good catch and glad to hear you didn't have water in your fuel.

Thanks for the reply BlackHat. I was wondering if anyone had a link to the aftermarket plug that can be inserted by hand. It's oversized, so to speak, and does not require any tools.

Thanks,
Bear

deadbear,

The part number i posted is for the oversized (so to speak) tighten by hand drain plug for the HFCM. It replaces the factory flush plug.

Here is a link to a picture of it
