Holy crap! are some of fellas driving over a 100 miles to work and back? I thought I had it bad, I only burn about 50 bucks worth of gas a week. That's to work, school, to the store, and everywhere else I go. Also consider that I drive my 86 F150 daily, she gets about 12 mpg. Like jake00 I only commute around 10 miles a day.
For now it still aint worth it for me to sink a bunch of money on a smaller vehicle just to conserve fuel costs, although I'd buy a 500 dollar running beater Escort or Taurus in a heart beat.

Yup,,, I drive anywhere from 125 to 195 each day, just to get to work and back. That does not count detours for the store or other errands. Probably the only drawback to living in the boonies!!!
Let's see.. my commute is 15 miles around trip and the Ranger has been getting 30mpg. One week I work 4 the next 3 so I'll figure 7 and divide. $6.62 with gas prices at $3.78. We've thought about moving out of the city but you can't beat how close we're to everything. Just use the money we save to travel is the plan.. I think.
I drive 80 miles round trip 5 days a week. In the truck, ouch. BUT, i got a 99 Escort ZX2 Sport for that trip. Getting 35 mpg hand calculated. Less than $10/day.
I sure miss driving my truck daily though.......................
My first motor vehicle, a whizzer motor bike, cost me almost nothing to operate. I would make the rounds of local service stations draining the residual gas into the 1 gallon tank. Occasionally I would buy a nickle or a dime's worth (at about .25 per gallon). I was 12 years old ..... wish I still had that old Whizzer.
Lots of municipalities and counties are toying with the idea of 4-day workweeks......which would help the situation some.
In professions like firefighting, they've been able to stretch it to 3-day workweeks......Particularly in places like NYC, where local housing is cost-prohibitive, and the firemen might live 60 to 80 miles away. Seems like a lot (it is).....but when you drive to work 2X or 3X per week instead of 5X.......It's doable.
I would LOVE a 4-day workweek..........Day 1 of a 2-day 'weekend' is usually a recovery day anyway......3 would be nice.

Don't really care for your politics dono, but anybody that road an old Whizzer can't be all bad! I too road a Whizzer when I was a kid, then an old WWII Harley "45" stripped down. Went on to owning 12 more Harley's (maybe that's where my son got his name?). Then in 1972 an old family friend turned me on to an old Indian (1935) Haven't looked back. I now have 6 Indians, and I'm trying to buy an Indian "4" from Texas.

My son-in-law just bought an Ambassador for his commute (7 miles) 120 miles/gal
My politics? Most here are confused (think I'm a Lib) about my politics because I believe the Iraq invasion was a colossal blunder and Bush is an inept leader. Actually, I've been a registered Republican and a fiscal conservative for over half a century, even voted for Bush once ("fool me once, shame on you - fool me twice, shame on me").
I love old motorcycles and would buy the right antique in a split second. I bought that Whizzer for $12. Got it cheap because it wouldn't run and the clutch (slip-belt) didn't work. A set of points got it running and I wired the clutch into operating position until I finally got the money to buy the spring. I had only 1 Harley, a "61" inch knuckelhead.
That Ambassador is a nice looking little machine, a motorcycle - not a converted bike.
I'm still looking for an old bike, almost bought a '60 Matchless, but decided it was too modern. I envy you those Indians ..... Indians have "personality".
I don't commute to work, I drive and live in an '07 Peterbilt. Try filling that sucker up 2-4 time a week at $800-$900 a fillup. No question in my mind why things are costing more!! About 5 months ago, I bought a '95 Honda Goldwing for running errands and to get parts, 35-40 mpg is better than my 4x4 '99 F-150which gets around 16 on the highway, don't know what city mileage is, scared to find out.
