Hello, I have a 2005 Ranger Edge 4X4, 4.0. My alternator went bad this morning. We pulled the old one out but cannot find anywhere on it how many amps it was. After checking with 4 local auto parts stores, I'm told that I need to choose either a 95 amp or 130 amp which they are showing for my model. When I call Ford, they tell me I need a 115 amp which no auto parts store around here sells. My question is..if I get the 95 amp (which the majority of the people are telling me to do) will it hurt anything if its not the correct one? I don't have power locks or power windows nor do I have anything extra hooked up to the truck. I'm hearing many mixed opinions and would appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks!
There are two physical sizes roughly 5 1/4 and 5 3/4 first go by physical size it is probably a 6th generation alternator which means it is rated 95-110 amp in reality they will make about 75-80 amps at 2000 rpms that is all that the Ford manual calls for when checking the output. just make sure whoever you buy it from tests the new before you take it home. There are a lot of rebuilts out there that won't charge straight out of the box.
The rule of thumb is never go smaller. If you go with a higher amp model.
1. It has to physically fit in the engine bay.
a. Direct fit no modification or
b. You have to be willing and capable of making it fit. And in a Ranger the space
avalilable can make this a challenge.
2. Upgrade the output wire and fuse/fusible link to accomodate the increased amps.
