thermostat for the 400 engine

i have seen on this form and been told to only use a Cooper-Robertshaw thermostat. why is this brand the only one to use? is thier a problem with the NAPA autoparts thermostat? if so what is the difference?

I've never heard of that brand, I have never had a problem with Napa products. Napa thermostats are made by Stant, the one they call super stat is better in quality. although in my toy0t@ i had to use a factory unit, all other failed after a couple of weeks. Good Luck -RW

The ROBERTSHAW is the correct thermostat, I'm living proof...well maybe my truck is. I had an overheating problem, went to the "correct" t-stat and my overheating went away. Do a search on it, try the part # which I think is 333-192.

I think it has something to do with the shape of the sides doesn't it? I thought I saw a diagram regarding that once. I don't have my 400 build book with me otherwise I'd try to look it up. Although I have a Gates thermostat in my 400 and it has worked fine.

351C/351M/400 Thermostat

As original: D0AZ8575A .. Thermostat-192 Degrees (Motorcraft RT139)

Still available from Ford: MSRP: $8.62.

Fits: 1970/82 351C/351M/400

This is the only T/stat listed for these engines.

A search thru several car & truck parts catalogs shows D0AZ8575A was not used with any other engines other than the original applications.

Unrulee was correct on the part no. for the Robertshaw t-stat. Here's a link to it at Flowkooler:

Here's a comparision pic

The "correct" one is on right. Supposedly there is a bypass in the block that only works with the one on the right.

I just use that mr. gasket deal, even though for my purposes no thermostat would work.
