there is a fine thread around here about it, use the search function, its a very specific tstat, anyways i cant remember it from the top of my head but use a minimum of 180 degrees to keep the engine from premature wear...

Well the reason I asked is because I just did mine yesterday on my 351m. I have a paper with a part number, name, etc. I figured I would leave them here but if he has figured it out then there is no need.

I would recommend a 180 degree, even for Canada weather. I don't know if you can use Oreilly auto parts or not but this is what I used. Motorad USA Murray Temperature Control 3468 - Standard Thermostat | O'Reilly Auto Parts

$19.99 is a bit much but I don't know how Canada's part system works. This one is just a general T-stat. I have yet to put it all together and run the motor since I ran into a snag with the upper radiator hose being the wrong one. I don't think you really need anything fancy for just being a thermostat.

You can use a 192 if that's what fits you. That will just mean that your heater won't get too warm till the coolant hits around that temp. Wear shouldn't be a big concern as long as you make sure to change the coolant and flush everything with water once in a while. The wear and tear is caused from the coolant sitting. You just have to keep an eye on it

Here is the 192.
Motorad USA Murray Temperature Control 15469 - Ultrastat Thermostat | O'Reilly Auto Parts

EDIT: Also keep a close eye on the engine temp. A higher temp t-stat will run the engine hotter.

that's the thread !! i don't know why i couldn't see it haha, best engine wear occurs at 180 degrees and up, modern manufacturers use 192 and 195 degrees to keep emissions down, it all depends on your engine, if yours is an old low compression 351m i would definitively use a 192 to keep better fuel mileage, the only reason to use a lower t stat is to keep pinging down on a boosted or high cr engine

That's a lot of good information. Thanks for posting that, I perused the stickies and never saw it

Right now I just have that Murray 180 in it. I'm not sure how much everyone else drove their vehicles with a 351M in it but I don't drive mine and when I do, it isn't really that far. That can still cause overheating just not as easily. Plus, over here in Washington, it never gets that hot outside. Highest I have ever seen was low 100's and that was years ago. Another not in my case, come spring/summer I might not even have a 351 anymore, I was toying with the idea of finding a 460 to drop in it. Either that for find another 351 and rebuild that, then swap my motor out for the new one.
