New Guy wanting a 08 F-150

Hey guys im new here... My name is Raul and i drive a 2003 7.3L truck with some mods

well i need a new work truck and with all the rebates that ford is giving i went and test drove a 08 F-150 4.6L super crew

Im new to the gas thing and was wondering what you guys thought about the 4.6L.. ill be using it as my DD to and from job sites and will occasionally load the bed with around 500lbs

should i go with a 5.4L instead? or do you think the 4.6L will have enough power?

sorry for all the questions but the gassers are new to me... just for kicks here are a couple of pics of my current truck

thanks for the help

-Raul

i have a 04 with the 4.6 and it has more than enough power than carrying 500lbs in the bed, i imagine the 08 would be a bit better. ive talked to a few people at the shop that i work at and they have 5.4's around the same year 04 or 05s and we are getting around the same mileage and none of us baby it either .so i can only guess that the 08s would have abit more power and have some of the drive by wire hesitation resolved well they better, i just reflashed my truck and had way better throttle response, but yeah for a daily driver the 4.6 is great i have had no problems or complaints other than it does not always smoke the tires, sometimes i can but depends or surface, well if i brake torque it i can but thats a no brainer, ok well i hope i helped i gone on for too long probably bored ya but thats what i think

cool thanks for the info bud.... the power thing is def worrying me... when i test drove it today i was a lil shocked at how long it took too take off.... now i am used to my truck at almost 700ftlbs of toruqe to the wheels.. which could be why i was very not impressed with the 4.6L

after doing more and more research im leaning more towards the 5.4L only because their is hardly no MPG diff and their are more tuners available for the 5.4L.... if i can really get around 2mpg more with the edge then its def going on as soon as i get it.....

yeah i want to get an edge too to make a diff in power and mpg, but yeah if there was one available at same price when i got mine i would have got a 5.4 for surei dont kn ow abouthe take off thing you talk about, mine takes off pretty quick for A 6000lbs+ truck with what i have in it right now, in the bed that is,but for tuners there are probably the same if not more for the 4.6 than new 5.4. but anyways welcome and hope you have fun

Raul B: honestly, for a DD that never sees any sort of work/load situation, the 4.6 will be just fine for your purposes. Only in the Reg and Scab though. The Supercrew is damn near 6,000 lbs.

MPG wise, the 4.6 is only slightly better than the 5.4. In the city they are damn close. On the highway, the 4.6 slightly shines. I've gotten 20+ MPG with my 5.4. You just have to be smart about how you drive.

I suggest you test drive 2 identical trucks with the only difference being the motor. the 5.4 will clearly be the better truck. it just has the higher $$$.

Then the 4.6 is just for you. It's cheaper and the upkeep is minimal.

I have a 04 5.4 extended cab and love it. My buddy use to have the 4.6 and he let me drive it before I got my truck and I stomped on it and I was very dissapointed. No get up and go and not enough power for me. I dont go fast but its nice to know if you hit the gas your gone. Both are nice but thats my opinion and expecially since they get pretty close to the same gas mileage. Let us know what you go with.

cool....

well i found some used 06's and 07's for under 15k... the 07 is a XLT crew cab 5.4L with barely over 20k miles on it for 14k and a 05 with leather ect. for 15k

im prob gonna go the used truck route instead of buying new....

If you're going used with the 5.4, you might want to go with the later built '07's that have the redesigned plugs. The earlier built 5.4's had some issues with plugs breaking when changing.
