ok 2 nights ago we installed a 4" turbo back magnaflow system with the muffler and i noticed after the install it almost sounded like i had a "tapping" at idle i didnt hear with my stock straight pipe. so i scanned for codes on the way home and i found two here they are 1. PO478 2. PO470. now both said they were exhaust codes so im wondering if the computer is "sensing" a difference in my system? if so is it a bad thing?. also about the injector deal i went under my real time data window and found the injector control volt reader thingie (diablo predator) and it was at 1.52 at aprox. 1600 rpm and about .80-.90 at idle is that normal? im gusin thats the ICP sensor.. thanks for the help guys
(edit) forgot to add that i do have like two lil rust holes in my EBP tube
Tapping at idle? Certainly the new exhaust should not have affected the motor. Check that the downpipe and exhaust are not contacting the frame. Take a close look at the bolts at the front cross member.
well i listend to it at idle just a lil bit ago and it sounds like its coming from the driver side of the motor could it be the legendary "no 8" noisy injector and if so what can i do.. anything that ford will do? i am bout to start diesel school so having to tools wont be a problem thanks
You can probably clear both of the exhaust codes be replacing the EBV tube. That might also cure the tapping noise.....but it isn't uncommon to notice a little valvetrain noise after freeing up the exhaust. If that is what it is.
It doesn't sound to me like it's anything to get too worried about.
That tells you a lot about how big the difference is. I find it extremely unlikely that the exhaust caused the noise, unless the downpipe is touching the frame or body. Which means that the noise was already there and you just were not able ot hear it.
If you have a LL in the #8 hole and it's ticking....it's still not a real problem. People have put hundreds of thousands of miles on LL injectors and never even known they were there. I put 144,600 on my LL8 with it ticking all the while....it was never an issue.
the 478 most likely wont go away. that means the pcm is seeing a higher than expected backpressure level. 99.9% of the time that means the ebp sensor is damaged from soot and moisture and needs to be replaced. the brass internals corrode and cause the sensor to send false signals. the codes will have no effect at all on performance. unless you really want to replace the sensor, just ignore the codes. i wuold however, repair the exhaust leak.
As for things that can take the edge off #8 noise; look into fuel delivery quality. The Hutch mod helps (do the harpoon while you're at it) and CCK or regulated return will help as well.
