OBD-II With CAN

The current Harbor Freight catalog lists for sale an OBD-II Scanner with CAN.

It seems that the 6-oh's are CAN vehicles.

Has anyone tried this scanner yet?

CAN is Controller Area Network and not necessarily diesel compatible. CAN and Diesel have nothing to do with each other, it's just the way the components communicate with each other. For a diesel, you will need to find out if it can read diesel.

Yeah, the CAN thing is going to give you airbag and ABS codes, doesn't it?

Check out AutoEnginuity - OBD2 with the Ford specific software - good stuff about $200 for laptop software and cable.

Can I just use this software to monitor the engine and scan codes and install tunes in my truck? Any other tips you have about this would be great. Sean

Nope.

CAN is simply a new communications network standard whose use is mandated on ALL US-market vehicles by 2008 (iirc). Ford started using it on 04 MY vehicles.

That means that your older scan tools and readers are worthless if you buy an 04 or newer Ford unless you can get an upgrade for it.
