Thanks fir the welcome's and the answers on the battery questions guys.
I had a "repair" done on my alternator which seems to be 'sort of' holding up, in as much as my truck starts and the batteries don't die but I still have a battery light and low voltage coming out of the alternator.
I need to order a new alternator and wondered if there's a preferred type, or place to buy from?
Again, appreciate all and any help.
David.
99.5 PSD CC SB 2WD and only the intake mod. 6637 & batt box delete.
I prefer NAPA or Carquest electrical, as they seem to be somewhat more durable than the AutoZone units, and you can get another one if needed most anywhere in the US.

Find a local shop that will rebuild one. Might cost a bit more, but if you can find the right guy, it will be worth it.
Order a large case alternator with higher output. Mine stock one died with 135000 miles and I replaced it with a 160 amp Heavy Duty alternator that has larger diodes. I cant remember the site I ordered it from but it wasnt much more than a remanned from local stores. I will post the site later when I find it.

I agree, my "other" store one lasted a year or 2 and I was on my way to Alaska and had to pay for another one from NAPA even though the original was lifetime, it was worthless 2000 miles from the store.
Just had to replace mine and got one from NAPA. They had a 1 year and a 3 year. Others that i have talked with said that NAPA seems to have good stuff.
The bottom line is not so much the max output amps, but the output amps in the rpm range our trucks run at and the quality of the bridge rectifier diodes.
I run a 200A+ that I had locally rebuilt, but I ran 105A with 80A diodes that lasted 8 yrs in my last truck. As it does about eveything, heat kills alternators too. If your batteries get discharged more than normal the stock alternator has to work too hard to charge it and power all the electronics in the truck. It overworks, gets hot, and lays down and dies.
The extra $75-$100 on a high quality alternator will save you way more than that in the long run. A $179 cheapie isn't cheap when you have to buy two $129 batteries also because it ruined them.
Thanks all for the advice,
After a bit of reading it makes sense to go with the larger case with higher output and component ratings. The NAPA ones I'm *sure* are better than the Discount, or whatever they're called now, ones. But I like this 160Amp alternator with beefier components better yet, and considering it's not worth me shipping my core back, not that different in price. I figger then I'll have the old one torn down and rebuilt for a backup by someone who knows a little better than the last guy.
Thanks again for all the input, invaluable help.

I agree with the local shop, I just had to have on rebuilt and have a reputable shop in town and it has a lifetime warranty and was cheaper than the local parts houses. The part houses alternators were also like 105-110A where the rebuilt was 130A.
Thanks again for everyone who offered advice on my original question. I ended up with a 200Amp'er, built out with Heavy Duty rectifier, diodes and welded connections. An overall well built (at east seems to me) alternator. I bought it from a guy who has a store on ebay (don't laugh, I'm out of the country) and had a bud bring it down on a flight. If you need the store, check out ebay and search for seller "A#1Starterman". The one I bought was new, but he sells all kinds of electrical parts for these trucks, starters/ rebuild kits, etc.
