And, the larger the diameter of a rotating mass, as well as the weight, the more friction it takes to alter it's direction. It's called physics. Weight as well as diameter both have an effect on the moments of inertia (rotational mass). The farther something is from the center of rotation the more power it takes to start and stop it. Weight is also an effecting factor. Not only does a larger diameter wheel or heavier wheel take more to stop, it also takes more to get it moving.
BTW, shift1313, nice looking wheel
yup...and the aluminum wheels and low profile tires are lighter and the same or smaller diameter (depending on tire selection) then the stock steel wheels and bias tires the trucks came with and the brakes were designed for.......

and yes, I have been to LA.....

of course there is no real scale but i tried to scale things as close to actual as possible. I dont know how it will look with stock lift. Ill have to mull this over a bit.

also i found those same rims from american racing with shelby cobra center caps, they come in 17,18,19,20,22 and i think 24 for some odd reason.
If the truck were lower and the wheels/tires were tucked in the wheel wells, it would really be a nice setup.

i agree dave it has to be lower by at least the sidewall height so the rim is about at the fender opening. thats a 4-5" drop rear and 3-4" up front, not sure if thats going to work so well......

if only you could try rims on like shoes

I saw this while browsing the bumpside section (hi!)

I have a 79 dropped 3"/4" with the DJM setup.. 255 50 17s in 17x7" rims all around. I honestly wish I went 18/20 but the cash wasn't in the cards. I may sell these if the price is right, as these wheels are discontinued.

When I first got it last summer, it looked like this. I feel poser 4wd looking 2wd trucks are stupid. Pre-Runners just don't exist in MA. (Yes, that is my father's 57 Chevy)

after talking to my cousin he told me if we have to put drop beams on the front to make it look right we will. He said it needs at least 4-5" drop in the rear and the front make level with the rear(accounting for rims and tires). He also mentioned painting the grill black with the body since we are putting a billet grill insert on the truck.

psquare, thanks for posting those pics!

For practicality sake, why not consider going 17"s all around, with different diameter/aspect ratio tires to achieve the look you want, with the money you save going that route, you would have more for other aspects of the build.I too like the torque wheels you pictured and agree with one of the posters who suggested painting the spokes body color as an interesting option. wouldnt this be a compromise worth considering, since it sounds like you guys kinda like the old school look of the truck, why not build it to where when people look at it,the changes are sorta subtle. Keep in mind, too that certain classic styles are always timeless, and always get an envious look from other vehicle enthusiasts, and some of these current trends like 20" plus tires/wheels may just fade away. I just happen to like some lowered trucks, and some lifted trucks, but, like another respondent earlier in this thread, ive seen vehicles that could be best described as "ghetto",which doesnt appeal to me......just my 2 nearly worthless copper discs emblazoned with Pres. Lincoln...............Bob

i agree you have to be really careful with rims and size because just an inch different can look bad.

my cousin really likes this truck

it has 17s on the rear and 16s up front but it has a 5" drop.

Looking at my options i can get 3" drop beams and do a 4" shackle flip in the rear and still have frame clearance as long as i keep the axle below the leaves. also keep in mind the rims will still have some meat on them so it wont be no side wall. the stock OD is almost 30" so there will be close to 4-5" of sidewall. I really like both looks, my camaro has 15" corvette rallys on it with 275s and big meatty tires complete the look on that car. this truck may really take to 20s. I just have to be careful with tire widths as i dont want to compromise steering.

I love that truck! He lives near Baton Rouge and last time I talked to him they were redoing it to get rid of the beams and put a mustang II type suspension on the front. Those pics there are about 5 years old. They custom made that phantom grill, I want one on my truck.

Back on Topic I think 18's and 20's would look good with some drop to tuck the wheels. I don't like the look of trucks with big rims and them not tucked up in the wheel well. It looks funny to me but of course thats just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions!

i agree jsutton. do you have any idea how much drop that green truck has? i know its bagged and im sure the bags are deflated so thats not the ride height(those front tires wouldnt last). but i couldnt find any other pics of it

It definately needs to tuck the rims a bit. Since the tires just barely go into the wells now, if we drop it 4-5" that will be about the sidewall of the tire on the 20s with stock OD. What we are going to do is drop the truck and measure things up with the ride height and decide which rims will look best from there. I know he wanted 20s but we are going to put the best looking setup on the truck for the suspension drop we decided.

IIRC it just has 3" dropped I-beams on it and then the airbags. They may have raised the pivot point on the other end of the beam too. They did that to a shop truck they have. On the shop truck they just raised the pivot point and cut the springs so it would get more drop without all the negative camber.

You wanna check out wheels and tires , check out big block ford from riverside , it is a 56 f-100 with looks like torque thrusts , in my book the best looking combo for flaresides , going to save up for this combo after buying new rims recently , he is in the 48-56 galleries .
