The key factor would be how fast the display updates. If you can see each change to 12V, then a DVM would work just fine. I've always wanted to try reading the codes with a DVM on continuity (beep) mode between the STO and ground, but haven't done it yet.

I think it would be impossible to read with a DVM. But I don't know why you would want to, when you can sit in the cab and watch the light blink. Or you can spend $30 on a code reader and never again have to worry about missing one of the blinks.

It is an older, nice Fluke 77. So it is very fast and should pickup. It has an LCD analog display accross the bottom of the meter.

My concern is the codes are not flashing at all. Also my local auto repair shop had the same problem. My truck just floods out like you wouldn't believe. I bet the computer is holding them wide open.
