1976 F100 360, shows low charge on idle, took voltage regulator off and starter relay off and sanded contact surfaces for good ground and used bigger bolts to re-attach. Now showed normal charge at idle but when I accelerate to around 3000 rpm and hold it shows no charge. Took it for drive came back let it idle and it shows no charge. Before I did anything took alternator to NAPA and had it tested the said it was good. Pulling my hair out someone please help. By the way I tested the alternator at the battery and on the alternator bolt and it shows same every time.
How are you checking to see if it's charging or not? I would use a voltmeter on the battery to check it. Check the voltage with the truck off, and then with it on. If it's higher with the truck running, then it's charging. If you really want to test it, turn the headlights, heater blower, and anything else that would cause a load and then check the voltage. It may be low with the engine idling, but should be able to keep the voltage up when you rev the motor.
