Hey I was wondering if anyone out there has ever swapped a 6.9l into a 94-97 3/4 or 1 ton ford. I just bought an 84 f350 4x2 automatic for $500, the engine has less than 5,000 miles on it since the company that owned it put a new engine in it just before they auctioned it off but the rest of the truck is pretty well trashed. I originally bought it to put in my 1970 toyota land cruiser but i have decided against it since it has way more torque. So i have a guy that is a dealer looking for trade-ins between 94-97 that are in good shape that have a bad power stroke coupled to a 5 spd manual 4x4. My question is will the 6.9l bolt in with minor mods. Fabrications should not be a problem since I'm a welder/machinist/mechanic on heavy coal mining equipment. I could easily build most everything I might need. I just wasn't sure if the 6.9l bolts to the 5 spd. Any advice is appreciated. Also I'm not too worried about having less power I am mainly just looking to build a truck to drive to work since theres a lot of deer and antelope.
Thanks,
Mike
Short answer is yes. It will bolt up, but make sure you keep the starter ring/ engine spacer from the powerstroke. The Flywheel should work, but if you have access to the right machines than you can easilly mod them to make it work.
The wiring is fairly simple on the 6.9 so if that engine comes with a wiring harness, it would be fairly strait forward to perform the swap.
Much easier than dropping a powerstroke into an older truck.
Well, I forgot to mention I'm also working on my electrical degree as well to be a certified electrician. I guess I am a jack of many trades(I can't stand doing the same thing day after day, I get bored easily so this way I'm always doing different things). So I can use the power stroke flywheel? What sort of issues will I have with the tranny input shaft? Just the pilot bearing size? Or is the shaft going to be a different length?
If you are able to use the flywheel from the powerstroke than its a bolt on job because that tranny was already on that flywheel.
This was discussed here before and I think the flywheel from a powerstroke will bolt onto an IDI, but I'm not completely sure. If all else fails you could still get a flywheel from a 7.3L diesel from 1988-1993.
The bellhousing will work, the slave cylinder should work, the floor hatch is different, drive shaft will be different (but if you have the donor that may not be a problem), and I can't think of anything else....
Well i plan on finding a truck that has a power stroke that is junk so i can just bolt my 6.9 into it. So from what i have read it looks like everything should bolt in.
Freeland,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
Depending on where you are located, the only thing I can think of that may throw a wrench in your plans is emissions.
In your area, diesels over a certain GVW may be exempt from emissions.
A 6.9 may not be able to meet say 1996 emissions, and if the truck was a 1996 it would have to pass the 1996 emissions.
Also the IDI has a throttle cable, the Power Stroke does not.
I can't remember for sure, but I think the cable will still bolt in the cabs up to 1997.
And you might have a problem with moving/selling/DEQ changing at a later date.... when I lived in Califonia and moved to Oregon DEQ gave me all kinds of problems with my 1964 Nova, and it was a factory V8...
