That was my first thought, but it's tough to get the bearing caps off with the third member still in the housing.

What he means is that the carrier is stuck in the case. I don't know what else would be keeping it in place, so it will probably pop out with the right force.

Yea, I see what you mean, but what axle does he have, and what exactly does he consider a "third member"? lol!

If he is talking about the Differential stuck in the case, he may have to use a case spreader to make the case open up so that it does not pinch the bearings in place. If it was the rear axle and he was trying to pop it out the back end, I used a come-along attached to the rear bumper of the truck. Getting it back in was a horrible PITA.

Well, he says it's an 88 F-150, and the front "third member" is stuck, so I'm assuming he's talking about the Dana 44. It wouldn't be the first time I misunderstood someone.

It's sure a challenge figuring out what folks are trying to say, especially when they use some terms interchangeably with others.

Oh yup missed the part about it being the "front" so yea he'd have to have the axles out.

Yea get a big pry bar and work it out, make sure you allow the pinion to rotate as it comes out. If it is kept from spinning it would hold it in place and fight to work against you.

I have heard of the 9-inch ford axle removable assembly referred to as a Third-member So I would assume the same of the front TTB as that being called a third member. Not sure what else to call that thing.

Yea the nine has always been called a third member as long as I can remember. The front as a separate "unit" it could be called that too I guess, different animal though.
When I read it I completely read over the fact it was the front and assumed it was a rear 8.8? he was working on.

The passenger side axle is held in with a c-clip.
