I have a 03' 7.3 F-350. Last night I noticed that my truck would not shift into overdrive. The overdrive light wouldnt come on or go off but from what I have read this is a common problem with these trucks and tomorrow Im going to check the wires. But back to my problem, once I noticed that my truck wasnt shifting into overdrive, I pulled over and check the tranny fluid from what i can tell nothing out of the ordinary, the level was good and no burnt smell. Started my truck up and started to go home and now it shifts fine no problem. This morning it happened again, pulled over, turned the truck off, started back up and it shifts into overdrive again. So now im confused. I live in NC and the temps have been anywhere from 75-95 when this happens. Hopefully someone can help because I dont have a clue.
sounds to me like the wires in your shift lever have broken and are grounding out and not allowing it to go into overdrive. I would check that out first
I agree. You have a wire in the shift column that is occaisionally making contact with ground. The PCM sees that as you pressing the OD OFF button, and it is following orders and turning off overdrive.
and if your cheap like me, you can just pull the old wires out of the shifter and thread new ones in and re wire it and protect it at the pinch point. Effective and much cheaper than a new shifter from ford
