I have the early '99 that didn't come with the foil on the driver side pipe. I switched mine out for the later style since I had a few pin holes in them in which I lost boost. After changing out to the later pipes with the foil, the first thing I noticed was a quieter turbo. I can be driving down the interstate now and carry on a conversation. Don't get me wrong, the turbo wine is cool, but it sure is nice to have the noise reduction too. I also got more boost since the boots needed replacing as well as the pipes themselves. I'm seeing a max of 28lbs.

Chris, I didn't notice such a loud turbo whine when I did my foil delete. I can talk as much as I want with all I have on my truck.

I wrote in a tread about two weeks ago about insulating these pipes. both of my pipes are insulated, and my FIPK, cold side is wraped with pipe ins and thermo tec. Why have a SPERACO intercooler and cool the air and than let it get hot again. Try this next time you drive your truck after its warmed up get out and put your hand on the IC pipe anywhere, it will burn you hand.

I'm going on vacation with the kids in a couple of weeks and will try that experiment.

Anybody who would say that a 1250* manifold will have little effect on a bare uninsulated pipe nearby should get a lot of attention. I guess I am just blowing smoke. Maybe I will just go sit in the corner. This would be easy if the cold side had foil. Me thinks it may be primarily noise related but I can't be sure. I too would love to settle this.

im with you mike, the air may be going quick through there but the pipe would have to draw some heat from the mainfold, it would definatly be better insulated.
im thinking about getting some good insulation for mine and wrapping it up,and maybe even wrapping the turbo in one of thoes bags to keep the engine bay a bit cooler

lol i dont know why they would quite that little bit of turbo noise you guys ever ride in a duramax there turbo is WAY louder in the cab then my truck is wiht out the foil. im sure thers a reason.. my guesss is the one side doesnt have it due to it goes thru the intercooler soo the other side has it is to keep the air cool???? but i could be wrong im not really that smart when it comes to these intercool or how the turbo flows goes .but i BET if it makes sence that passenger side isnt wraped becuase it still have to go thru the ic right????

Just for interest, we recieved 7.3's for a couple of years after your coil front 6ltrs were introduced, I think they were made in brazil.
Ford Aust stopped importing in 2006, due to the 7.3's not meeting new pollution laws, and not enough demand to justify re-tooling (for right hand drive) the factory for the new models!
So now the re-sale value of our f-series is really high over here eg. I paid $75k in 2003 for mine new, to resell at the moment with 100km I should get around $60k....but I certainly dont want to get rid of it!!

i guess the only thing to do is to remove the foil and paint the pipe with an insulating paint to clean the look of the engine bay

I Thought there was something to this. I agree, don't sell it, I will drive mine till the engine falls out of it.

I think a heat shield is the way to go, cus I know I dont want to lose the whistle you gain from removing the foil. Maybe Ford had it backwards and we need the foil on the other side...

I have actually felt the 'hot' pipe after running the truck for a while (@hour or so on the interestate) and the pipe was no hotter than most other metal parts under the hood. Obviously everything is hot but the pipe wasn't as hot as I was expecting.
