Does anybody know the temp of the air going to the IC under a couple different pressures? I was just wondering, if it's so hot it needs an IC, couldn't some of that heat be going from the pressure side tube to the engine compartment air via convection at least partially compensating for the exhaust radiant heat?
At first I was confused? I think you are saying that the heat in the hot side CAC tube would radiate into the engine compartment and offset the manifold heat that it may absorb. I think not. The heat in the hot side CAC tube is nowhere near manifold temp, so that heat is going into that tube, period. That is thermal dynamics or heat transfer.
Now curiously, the cold side never came with foil wrap. That is the true mystery as it too can soak some heat from the manifold. Things that make me go hmmm. I think both sides could benefit from some shielding but in the end the charge ends up in the manifold which sits atop the engine and is a good heat soak in it's own right.
What cannot be denied is the fact that the cooler the start temp is, the cooler it will be going into the cylinder regardless of the manifold's poor thermal qualities and location.
I just had an epiphany thinking about this. The manifold design in our trucks that causes the hot and cold side of the intake manifold to be bolted to the hot **** turbo and share the same casting is a POS design. Simple, cheap, but far from efficient.
I was just about to order a banks air box set-up, would that be a mistake?
(dont know how to insert quotes, but was mentioned earlier about having the sticker on his truck)
yo dude
i put a thread up about a week ago and quized everyone what they thought was the best, as i told them all i had only heard about banks in australia untill now.
the reply i got from just about everyone was banks is good but overpriced and other stuff can be brought cheaper that is just as good.
i was recommended the AFE stage 2 intake (pure deisel power) i found are resonably priced and will freight worldwide.
sorry shade i just cotributed to hijacking your thread without even realising
The guy was right. Removing the foil allows heat from the driver side manifold to radiate and soak right into that pipe. It wasn't there just for noise.
Having said that, my foil is off. I will be fixing the problem though. It will not involve foil on the tube though.
What kind of heat increase would you see, the air isnt sitting idel in the pipe, so the heat gain would be little, I would think.. Sure wish I had a few extra bucks here, I would love to tapp into the pipe with a thermocoupling, aslo tapp into someones who still has their foil.
Nothing yet. I still have to take care of this issue. I saw what happened on the dyno, my stuff soaked up and I got no added ponies for the most part from 80-120R. Too late then. Remember, those manifolds can get red hot and temps of 1200 and above will jump right into that tube due to proximity.
I have considered header wrap, and exhaust shields, or an isolating piece of metal ala the Kwikk fuel feed shield. I am leaning toward an exhaust shield style setup like what covers cats etc. My concept will clamp on though so that the setup can be cleaned. Still on the drawing board.
What about ceramic coating? Definitely not cheap, but it should help keep the heat out, while still looking cool.
What Pat and Dan said makes sense. With the velocity of the air in the pipes, the air doesn't have time to soak up much heat from the walls. Also, the compressing of the air by the turbo will create more heat than would be absorbed from the pipes. That is the purpose of the intercooler being after the turbo.
I painted mine with regular rustoleum along time ago. (yellow). Still yellow no tarnishing or turning colors from the heat. What kind of heat we talking about?
With all the air moving through the compartment and pipes i doubt the heat is an issure. On the fence and Reason for insolation is for whistle. Vote. X2

I am not going to down play Banks or Bully Dog or any other vendor because they are all decent (now I did say DECENT) products, but also over priced and you can find much better on the market
they must have forgotten to put the foil on the aussie models cause i cant find any on mine
Yours may be a little different because you have an 04', and I take it it has a 7.3 in it. I heard the PSD was sold in other countries with the 7.3 in later models.
