6.4L Maintenance

Just wondering how often everyone is getting an oil change. My dealer says I should follow the sever schedule and change the oil every 5K. I tow a 15K fifth- wheel once or twice a month and don't think that qualifies sever enough to change the oil every 5k. I thought I would ask to see if those towing more often and the daily drivers are following the sever or normal maintenance schedule.

5k miles for an oil change is great. Fuel filters at 10-15k miles depanding on quality of fuel you get.

I agree 5,000 is good. I change mine at 3500 and i use synthetic rotella 5-40 that is CJ-4 Approved. Just because i have the truck tuned and i am pushing it i little harder.

My truck is primarily a tow vehicle for a 13K plus 5th wheel..Of the 13,600 miles over 85 % are towing miles. We do complete maint every 5K miles.

My service advisor had told me to make sure I stick to at least the 10k intervals. I never sent my oil to a lab but the look and feel and smell of the oil after 6000 (before I put on my bypass filter) made me think 10k was pushing it. I would have to agree that 5k to 7k is probably about right unless you do a lot of off roading and heavy towing.

Doesnt the manual also say XXXX mileage OR EVERY 6 MONTHS? I dont have it in front of me but I seem to recall that. There are certain times of the year I may not drive 5.000 miles in 6 months but I will do an oil change to validate my warranty just in case it ever becomes an issue.

Dont know the full story on the 6.4 yet but there are plenty of folks on the 6.0 forum that tried to push the maintenance intervals and wound up paying more money for things like injectors. Clean oil and clean fuel are critical for these engines and they appear to be pretty sensative to it. I recall some other threads on here where guys had blown engines and come to find out they were running way too long between oil changes. Its not worth the risk in my opinion.

The factory says every 10,000 or 6 months unless dusty conditions or towing often. I don't think that this is a wise interval so I do mine between 3500 and 5000. Just did it yesterday and it was time to do it at 4000.

I agree with caprang and jasfaa! 5,000 or 6 months which ever comes 1st. Cheap insurance for a $15,000 engine.

I agree with the more frequent maintenance as well...cheap insurance, although I have also heard of a lot of experienced and fleet guys just adding oil as needed and sending samples off for analysis to determine the viability of the oil as well as the general engine health. I do have a question:
How do I maintain my warranty if I do my own maintenance? Maybe I'll start a thread with this question?

I buy my own oil and filter and do 1 of 2 things......
1-pay the local shop $20 to do the oil change with my stuff, writes me a receipt that shows the date and mileage
2-keep the receipt showing the date you purchased the oil and filter and record your mileage on those receipts

I prefer method 1 but I am fortunate that I have a trusted friend that manages the garage and I know he is treating my truck as if it were his own.

I change my oil every 5k miles and fuel filters every 10k. Easy to remember, good for the truck.

Thanks for the replies. It seems I should continue with the 5k maintenance schedule for peace of mind, and to avoid warranty issues.
