I would have to agree that 5k to 7k is probably about right unless you do a lot of off roading and heavy towing.
I just had a FS-2500 By-Pass Oil Filter put on my truck today. I'm wondering how often you will change your oil now with the By-Pass Filter? I'm using synthetic oil I don't tow, but do some off road driving and live in an area that has cold long winters. I'm thinking changing the synthetic oil and By-Pass Filter @ 10k miles along with the normal oil filter and don't bother with testing the oil. Comments?

Actually the 6.4 injection system no longer uses high pressure engine oil to fire the injectors like the 7.3 and 6.0. It's a high fuel pressure common rail system. Engine oil in the 6.4 is only used to lubricate and cool engine internals. The most accurate way to determine oil change intervals is through oil analysis. Since few automotive owners have access to a lab...the suggested oil change intervals are in the owners manual. Note the word "suggested".

My plan is to follow the Ford suggestions, along with oil analysis of the drained oil. I have always been a fan of preventive maintenance. My 94 Yukon diesel gets an oil change every 5k miles RELIGIOUSLY!. 208k miles and it still runs strong. The reason for my added oil analysis is due to this "fuel in the oil" business that scares the beJesus out of me! How could a major manufacturer (either Ford OR I/H Navistar) let something like that get missed in testing or continue in manufacturing!?! And Ford's cavelier attitude about engines "making oil" is just too bizarre to comprehened! I guess there reall IS no cure for stupidity!...Oh well...It is still a nice truck that requires a little more care...Needful work vehicles...where will it end (he says in disgust)

One of the discriptions for the severe schedule recomendation is towing over 1,000 miles or extented idle peirods. I do not tow very often but one of my routes in 1,200 miles. Under this service period I change at 5,000 miles. During other periods I will go 7,500 miles but never over 10,000, as stated in the 6.4 powerstroke manuall.

Agree also, only ran about 1,000 miles over the winter and had to change it at six months. Just finished towing about 2800 miles this summer. It surprised me how dirty looking the oil is comparison to what my V10 was.

$95, that's an expensive service for oil and filters. However, I'm with you on the value of peace of mind.

Where do you get an oil analysis, and how much does it cost?

Well, you guys have answered my question. I just got my first oil change at Ford and it was $115 out the door with the disposal charge and etc. I guess it was worth it being the truck is under warranty and if there are any problems they serviced it. It appears most agree.

You can do the oil change yourself for less money but you have to either log in to Automobile Service Reminders and note the date and mileage of the service you performed yourself online and it gets you the same thing. I get two oil changes out of $60 this way and I have a free dump site. It is a little bit of a hastle but I don't like taking my truck in for anything thats not warranty work. You can also call it in to 800-348-3063.
