Sorry if this is a lazy question. But... I was advancing my timing a litte. Feeling a little depressed lately. Iv'e been runing the crane H-260 for a couple of years now but I kind of lost track of th timeing marks. I advanced out to the little dot as indicated below. Does anyone remember what time point that is? Either way. It runs real nice there.
On a 300, the balancer just has marks. The timing numbers are actually on the pointer itself. You need to be checking this with a timing light and white paint. Just randomly turning the distributor won't get you anywhere without actual measurement.
Right. That's supposed to be a picure of the pointer. The balancer line is running on the 2nd dimple below the big main dimple in the pointer. I think it's 14 degrees BTDC. But I have to stick my whole head in there to see it and I keep getting smacked in the face with the fan. I was hoping someone rembered the markings.
OK, I understand your picture now. What you need to do is clean off the timing pointer with carb spray. Look up the timing specification for your year engine. If the emissions sticker is still on the valve cover or under the hood, this will be a good place to look. Then find the "arrow" that stands for the timing specification for your motor and dab it with white paint or white-out. Once you have cleaned off the timing pointer, you will be able to see the numbers.
Then, on the balancer, find the timing mark (there is only one) and mark it with white paint as well. When you set the timing, you use a timing light and you try to simply make the two pieces of white paint line up together. Turning the distributor changes how far apart the lines become because you are advancing or retarding the timing. The timing light only flashes when the #1 cylinder fires which means the timing mark is near the timing pointer. It is a strobe effect.
Trying to look at the timing numbers themselves while the engine is running is dangerous and futile.
I suppose I should clarify my question a little. I'm pretty sure that the factory timing is 11 degrees on these 1995 trucks...but that's not the point. Does anyone happen to remember what how the timing bar is marked? I'm thinking that the big tick mark is 10 or 11 then each subesquent small tick is two more degrees. does that sound right? I'm trying to avoid crawing in to try to read the marks.
Trying to help my buddy time his 94 300 5spd. I have read the posts that I have found and even more confused! The balancer has a notch and 2 stripes of white paint almost 180 across from the notch?? It also has 2 sets of timing marks one set is the bolt on (passengers side) and the cast in block on drivers side!!!!! Chilton manual is worthless, any help would be appreciated.
More confusion! The timing marks on the drivers side are on the timing cover, there is also another set on top of the timing cover???? the bolt on notched timing marks are on the passenger side. The balancer has a notch and approx 180 is a set of painted lines about a 1/2" apart. No scribe line just the notch????
This is how things are set up on my truck. I have some marks on the timing cover, and then a single notch on the balancer. To set the timing, I mark the number on the timing cover pointer that I need with white-out, then mark the notch on the balancer with white-out. Then it's just a matter of lining up the white marks under the timing light.
Thanks 400, this truck has the notch on the balancer and v grooved marker on passenger side of timing cover. Problem is the current location of marks while running is way off and with out being able to unhook/find the spout I have no clue on timing this thing! Did all the tracing of wires and damn near everything goes no where! All I could find is a eec-lV test plug, No grey plug that does not have at least 1/2 dozen wires coming out of it!!!!!
