I have an `05 4x4 Powerstroke Excursion with the stock transmision.
I`m running an Airraid intake along with the PMT from Bully Dog. Monster Transmission is sending me out a custom high performance torque converter for me to run next week. Has anyone on here done this and how hard was it?
My brother and I will do the swap in a few weeks and any info or pic`s would be great!! My tranny experience is limited to pulling them and reinstalling in sand rails...and DO NOT want to mess up my show vehicle.
If you do not have all the right tools plus a lift you're better off paying a well recommended transmission shop. It's not a job you want to be doing on your back trust me. I own a tranny shop, work on them all day long & still wouldn't think about doing it without the right equipment. Here in NY I'd charge $450. to do the swamp...believe me it's worth it.
well you will need a trans jack because getting crushed by a trans and transfer case is just not fun trust me. I have been there and done that. Other than that its simple just pull the trans swap converters and reinstall.
everything on a powerstroke is very heavy and hard to handle. I am assuming your running the 4r100. You need to find out if your new converter comes with and extra set of clucthes. If it does it makes your converter thicker. When this happens it takes the 1/4 gap between the converter and the flywheel out. You will think that you didn't get the converter all the way on to the pump. relying on the three click rule for the converter and some general mechanic skills this is pretty easy. Don't forget to replace the input shaft seal and lube it.... good luck
Make SURE you get that converter seated all the way. If you put the trans up to the motor and you are trying to force the trans together with the engine by bolting them together you may be causing some very very expensive damages. Normally, when you bolt the trans to the motor there should ba a small gap between the converter and flexplate. just enough to wiggle it back n firth a tiny bit. A bigger aftermarket ocnverter even with more clutches should still have a slight gap. If your converter is pressed against the flexplate and your trans isnt touching the engine you need to check that the converter is fully seated again.
