I'm in the process of changing my 1970 Bronco from a 3-speed manny to a C4 auto. I bought a donor 77 Bronco and I have all the parts neccessary to do the swap. I took the C4 to a very reputable shop for a rebuild before I did the swap and they provided a new flex-plate as well as a rebuilt torque converter. The flex plates are exactly the same (I still have the old one to compare it to), but I dont have the original torque converter as they took it for core. Here is where the problem lies........the converter will not bolt up to the flex plate. The bolt and drain holes line up fine, but the "nub" that sticks out of the center of the front of the converter sticks out further than the studs that go through the flex-plate. The "nub" contacts the end of the crankshaft before the bolts go all the way through the plate. Am I doing something wrong? Or do I have the wrong converter. Am I supposed to change/remove something at the end of the crank to do this conversion? The tranny shop is closed for the rest of the week due to a death in the family, and I have a trail run coming up REAL soon. Any insight would be helpful.
Please disregard the above post, as I must be have been smoking crack or something. I've never fooled with an auto tranny before and didn't realize that there was a bushing for the manny in the end of the crank.....DUH!!!!!!!!!!wham-wham-wham (me hitting myself in the head with a rubber mallet)
Better to locate the pilot bearing later instead of never. If you have trouble getting it out and do not have a tool to do it, pack the center full of wheel bearing grease, put a socket that is just small enough to go into the center, give it a pretty good hit with a hammer and the pilot bearing should pop out. Post again if you have trouble with it. Good Luck.
