It's about time for me to ditch my good ol' Ford and go with something that is more fuel efficient. I'm starting to smell just a little oil in the exhaust (and a cloud of smoke on start-up every blue moon).
I bought a motorcycle a month ago (hence why I'm not around much anymore), and have been riding nearly everyday since while the truck sits. I saved enough money in gas alone in the first 2 weeks to make the bike payment! $14/wk in gas for the bike vs. $80/wk for the truck
I'm more afraid that she's going to start to nickle and dime me to death. ****in exhaust leak is back and won't go away, not to mention a handful of other little quirks that's starting to worry me as they grow bigger. Everything in the engine bay is origional other than plugs/wires/alternator. Still has the origional brake rotors and drums on it.
I'd like to ask what the going rate for these trucks are in your area. I'm willing to take a slight loss on it since it's not perfect...but I don't want to kick myself later on. KBB is around $4500, while NADA doesn't list private-party sale, just retail, which is around $6700. I'm thinking of asking $4500 obo.
It's a 1997 F150 XLT, 4x4, 4.6L, AT. Power everything (but seats). 111,200 miles. 33" tires (65-70%), new brake pads, Tune-up <10k ago, and a few other things I'm probably missing. The front grill is cracked, no major scratches and no dents. Interior is flawless other than the headliner which is falling down (been like that since PO had it). Pictures in Gallery.
Oh yeah, it will be replaced with a '85-'94 Toyota P/U
The older toyotas are reliable... gutless, but reliable. Plus the older ones are good starting point for a trail/mud vehicle.
Exactly. Just gotta keep an eye on the timing chain, and front & rear main seals. Aftermarket support is right up there with the Jeeps, perfect for the trails, and it's still a truck so I can haul what I need to. Not completely gutless either...buddy of mine can keep right with me in his '86 with a 6" lift and 35" tires.
Yeah they have a real good aftermarket support. My buddy had a old beat up '85 toyota on 40" ground hawgs.. and was a pretty good mudding vehicle, just he needed some gears put in it.
I need to keep a full size truck as tow vehicle for my boat & car hauling trailer, but have been wanting to replace my daily driver that gets 22-24 MPG w/something much more efficient. Nobody has shown interest in my '98 F150 4X4 w/only 12,200 miles on it or Club Wagon w/225,000 so I'm stuck w/both Gas Guzzlers.
After considerable deliberation & searching I trailered home an abandoned, rust free, 2000 Chevy Metro 3cyl/5spd/3dr hatch last week to restore. Found a new U-Pull wrecking yard w/6 Metros in it, salvaged a bunch of parts on Sat & may have it running today. This Metro should get 45 routinely, even 50 MPG on a good day. They're a blast to drive in all kinds of lousy weather, surprisingly roomy & comfortable seats. FWD & 4 wheel independant suspension gives excellent traction & handling. Its got AC for FL heat. It also has 8 MPH bumpers, side impact door beams, dual air bags & got a 4 star safety rating from NHTSA. I spent years driving SAABs w/850 cc, 3cyl, 2-strokes & the Metro's 3cyl, 993 cc, FI motor seems like the perfect thing for me & $4 gas.
Of course the drop in demand has reduced prices, saw $3.679 at BP. However I expect any hiccup to shove gas prices right back up. In this market, where you can't give away Gas Guzzlers, the once ridiculed Metros are enjoying rabid demand. CNN did a story, now urban legend, about a 10+ y.o. Metro on Ebay that sold for more than it was new. This only stirred the pot & Metros are hot commodities. I was fortunate to find mine via word of mouth & foot work. Found the owner of a Metro XFi, the special high MPG version, asked if he'd noticed any dead Metros w/weeds growing around them. His tip led to my $300 unadvertised purchase. The XFi owner commutes 200 miles daily! Haven't let up my search & want to get a parts car.
It was the 1st time my F150 ever hauled anything & made the 80 mile round trip to get the Metro in OD as if nothing was behind it. You could melt down the F150, roll it out & make 3 Metros & have steel left over. More telling is that 3 people could be driving the 3Metros & use less gas than the F150!
Dont count on getting anywhere near what KBB says your truck is worth. The market is flooded with used trucks right now and the value has really dropped.
Id say if you manage to get $3000 for your truck you will have done pretty good.
Yeah, I know gas-guzzlers aren't selling well...but it's worth a shot. I'm not in any hurry to sell, as it only gets driven if it rains. Maybe someone wants it for the weekends hauling a boat or something. Or maybe some youngster fresh out of HS wants a truck (like I did). One can only hope. Like I said...I will be pretty flexable with the price, but I'm not going to give it away.
Do a little extra math just to be sure you aren't loosing and then spending more money than you will end up saving - even with the nickles and dimes. IMO it is really worth a little extra algebra.... plus I hate to see you torn from your Ford!
No way would I give up my F-150 to go to an '80s Toyota pickup. I had an '85 4Runner back when I was in highschool, so I know those things all too well.
To each their own though. I wish you luck...
ATC - keep the truck and forget the toyota. Drive the f150 1 day a week to keep the battery charged and everything lubed. Why buy someone elses ride (with unknown history)? Especially since you have the motorcycle? the toyota - even if it gave you 50% better fuel economy - would not save you anything if you drove it 1 day a week. Dont forget the taxes and tags with a new used vehicle. False economy. Especially if its not a daily driver, who cares about the exhaust leak?
Club: sorry to hear about your predicament. At least drop the insurance on them if they are sitting artound doing nothing. I feel your pain. My mom has an 04 heritage f150 with 30k miles perfect condition and was told that she could not get more than $4500 for it!!
A friend of mine was at the Port of Long Beach last week. He said they had 1000's of trucks down there. Most are being exported to russia and china. Unfortunately, they are not f150s. The people in those countries like mercedes SUVs and such. My friends were down there getting a porsche thru customs. He sold it to a guy in germany. The euros are scooping up vettes, porsches etc since the dollar is so weak.
Between the people of china and russia buying our trucks and the euros buying the sports cars, all we are going to be left with are mopeds and geos. Keep that in mind the next time goverment *ssholes tell us that they are saving the world by not opening up more oil exploration. Drill now *ammit! The rest of the world is moving forward are we are killing ourselves.
ATC have you got the finger for driving your slowoyta.....YET? I can't bash you too bad I sold my yota after buying my 97 XLT..... That thing is still on the road today.
