Has anyone replaced their front wheel seals (on a '98 - '00 Ranger with the dreaded vacuum pulse hubs)? Mine are making a high-pitched whistle-like sound whenever I engage the 4x4.
What I need to find out is how big of a job this is, and what do I need to buy besides the wheel seals? I've read on some other threads that there may be some o-rings that I need to replace, and possibly the hub nut needs to be replaced? I'm trying to put together a parts list, but I'm struggling to find any useful info on what all I might need.
The PVH hubs can be prone to squealing when they aren't engaged very often. Keep driving around in 4WD and the sound will probably go away. If it doesn't, then you might need a new PVH hub/bearing assembly. You can find them on eBay for about 160 bucks each.
Personally, if I were going to take apart the front hubs on a PVH Ranger, then I would also be converting them over with AVM manuals.

I had new hub/bearing assemblies put on it last year and I've also done the swap to AVM manuals. The squealing sound only occurs when I lock in the hubs, and it continues no matter how long I drive it. The four wheel drive works great, it's just really annoying and I'm worried that it's going to stop working when I need it most (commuting to work in the snow)!
