1992 F250 w/7.3L IDI diesel. I replaced fuel filter and now have a leak from the filter bowl. Haynes manuel is not much help...I got more info from the owner's manuel than Haynes.
I took it apart and reset everything nice and snug tight. Looked okay initially. I drove it today (1 day after reset) and I have the same leak.
It appears to be coming from the underside of the bowl and not from the gaskets (filter or bowl). I notice that there are 3 items on the bowl....the water drain, the thermal sensor???, and what appears to be something similar to an air valve. I double checked the water drain valve to make sure it was shut off...it was. The thermal sensor???or whatever it is appears to have a nice seal around it. The only thing I can think of that causes this leak is this air valve do-hicky.
Can someone please explain to me the interworking of the fuel filter/heater so I have some idea of what I'm dealing with. Any advice is apprecitated. At this point I'm ready to get a new drain bowl and filter.
the center piece is the water drain , it has an oring that can leak due to age
the electrical connection is the water in fuel sensor it also has an oring seal
the fuel heater is in the upper housing
i do not know what the air valve doohicky is i have never seen a third piece on these
unless it is something that someone has added
I had the same problem. I purchased a Wix filter #33617 which has the drain built into the bottom of the filter. You have to use the old sensor, but the filter comes with a new o-ring for it. The NAPA number is 3617.
Thanks all for the feedback. Dodge/Cummins, I'm referring to the filter bowl under the fuel filter. By the way, what is the shrader air valve the filter head for?
I think I'll replace o-rings on all...filter bowl, water sensor, and water drain valve. FYI, the valve do-hicky thing on the filter bowl is spring loaded and looks like it's part of the original construction of the bowl...not added on.
dyoung14, what is "rtv"? is that a specific silicone manufacturer??
ford390gashog, I looked up the Wix filter and I think I'm going to go with that. All in one construction takes that fuel leak problem out of the equation.
