Wiper issues....They don't work!

Well since I bought my motorcycle, I have been driving my SD only about once a week. Well since last Friday and today...it has been sitting...but I went to drive it today and no wipers. No clicking, groaning, twitching or cussing except for me. I checked the fuse under the dash and it is fine, and found it to be the same fuse for the washer fluid pump. Well that works. I also checked the Maxi fuse under the hood in the PJB and that is fine....at least by visual inspection. So what should I check next? Fuses are good, washer pump works, wipers don't.

Thoughts?

Try turning them on and working the arms manually. You might feel the motor working, but not moving the arms on it's own. Then I would check for voltages at the motor with a DMM. If the motor isn't being powered, I would look at the GEM next.

OK Tired the moving the arms with the switch on...nuttin

Well since I have to pull the cowel to get to the connectors...the voltage testing will have to wait until tomorrow. I need a new battery for my DMM.

This may sound stupid, but try turning your wipers on when the switch is in the high beam position.

I had a multifunction switch fail, the wipers would only work when the headlights were on high beam. Made it real hard to drive when it rained at night unless I left the high beams on and ignored the other cars.

Well the rain is coming....so I need to get this fixed quick....the local dealer wants an arm and a leg for either the MFS or the GEM. Any other places to get it without taking out a loan?

Not really, you could try a junkyard GEM or MFS, but there isn't any guaranty that it will function correctly.

I recently paid $100 for a Multi-function switch. Not really an arm and a leg in my book. A dealer will charge $100 just to look at the truck.

MFS is definitely available aftermarket - or at least, in an aftermarket box with a Ford logo on the part

I'd still check for voltage at the motor - otherwise you're just guessing.

Look for signs of infestation since it has been sitting a while.. Mice love to bed down in the most odd places and then chew on stuff.

Well now here is something interesting.....So I traced the wiring...no wear spots, no rodents chewing on it...nothing...all looked normal. Just not getting power to the motors....I checked the harness in the steering column, checks OK....Well I ran out of time so I had to leave it for the night...the next morning, I guess I had left the switch to the ON position....but on my way to work..I hit a bump and they start working again. I had checked all the connections...and this didn't happen until AFTER I had left the gravel road and was on paved road for about 10 minutes...wierd.

You know the old saying that if you can't get something to work the first time get a bigger hammer.

LOL!! I did think about that! Had a buddy that used to have an old MGB. The lights didn't work until jokingly I hit the fender then one tail light came on. So I hit the other fender and that one came on....we spent about 20 mintues hitting the fenders and all the lights were finally working.

Did you check the relays under the hood? Numbers 34 and 35.
