battery light on

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"></TD><TD vAlign=top noWrap align=right width=200 height=20></TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=2></TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=2>I have an 05 f150 4.6 xlt. about a month ago, when I was driving home from work, my battery light went on, so I went to autozone and had the guy plug their machine into my truck and figure out what was wrong with it. he said my battery, alternator and my starter were fine!

the leads to the battery are not corroded at all and look new. I took it up to Oriellys, local mechanic and I got the same thing!

I looked that symbol up in the manual and it said that the battery is not charging right. I have the same from when I bough the truck 3 years ago.

Some people have told me i just need a new battery, other say the wiring is bad and a sensor is out or something like that. i have been to the local ford dealership twice and the the light went off so they could not pull the codes off of it. Then when I leave it comes back on!

what could it be? what would be the cheapest way to fix this?
I am about to by a programmer, would this fix it?

thanks
Jimbo

You can test it yourself. Just go buy a good voltmeter. When the light is on, and the truck is running, check the voltage on the battery terminals. If should be about 14-14.5 volts. If it's 12v or less, you are not charging the battery, and I would check the terminals on the alternator and the surrounding area.

If the truck starts ok, then I would think the battery would be ok. The battery could have an intermittent cell, and when it went out, it is not going to start, and you would have about 10 volts on the battery, not 12v. If the battery is getting old and starting to go bad, the engine will tend to crank slow, and when it's cranking, the voltage may drop a little too low, and cause errors in the electronics.

I've read through many many posts today about the Fuel Pump fuse #27 issues. Mine 20a fuse burned up about a year ago. My truck would not start. It would just turn over but not start. I found through research it could be the #27 fuse. I replaced the fuse. Everything seemed good.

Sometime later, after replacing the fuse, my Battery light has started coming on every time I start my truck. Does anyone know if the in the TSB - 15-0137, if the MIL (malfunction indicating light) mentioned in the TSB could be my battery light?

After replacing the 20amp slot #27 fuse, I have not had any starting issues with the truck.

2012 F150 XLT. 3.6/V6.

Thanks everyone,

Donnie (STMPD1)

The MIL light is not the battery light.

Thank you for the information. Someone said to check out the Alternator Monitoring Circuit. I intend to start researching that circuit today

I’m not much of a mechanic but I’ve got a dependable friend who does my independent auto maintenance for me.

thanks as always for your response,

Get someone to scan for codes. Everything on those newer trucks goes through the computer so it may have a code in it, whether the check engine light is on or off.

I just had my truck at dealer this past week to replace BCM for a different issue. He said the battery light has nothing to do with BCM and there are no codes.

I needed my truck back so I did not get him to pursue the battery light problem.

im going to have my local maintenance guy check it out for me the next time I have an oil change.

thank you for your time and comment. It is greatly appreciated.

If the light is on because the charging system is not operating (most common reason), you're not going to go very far before your battery is run down.

It has been on for a year. No problem with battery or alternator output. No drain on battery, so no short to ground. I’m thinking it must be in the alternator monitoring circuit that someone has mentioned.

other than the light coming on there are no other symptoms for a year.

thanks for your response and your advice, it is greatly appreciated.

thank you,

Battery light still comes on

No I have not had the battery light looked at since my last post in this thread.
I run synthetic oil and only have 5k miles on the last oil change.

I still intend to get the wire checked for the alternator monitoring signal/ alternator feedback wire that runs from alternator to plug on firewall. I think it may be a yellow wire.

As soon as I get it checked I will report back.

thanks everyone,

STMPD1. Donnie

The only info I have is from posts in this forum about the alternator wiring.

I have not physically inspected or tested the wiring, yet.

Someone here can supply you with a wiring schematic / diagram to use to identify your alternator wires.

Good luck my friend. Someone here has your answers. Keep searching and posting in different threads on this topic

Thanks brother,

Donnie. (STMPD1)
