I've seen guys use vinyl tubing to protect the crank from being hit by rod bolts when installing pistons - what size is the inside diameter? Is there anything better to use?
I picked up some clear vinyl 3/8 ID | 5/8 OD tubing at Ace last night. The 3/8 fuel line they had looked really overkill, plus it was $3.50/ft where this was $0.55/ft. So I bought a few feet for this and a couple of other projects. Thanks again guys.
Even with cap screws, wouldn't you want to put something on there to guide the big end of the rod onto the crank without hitting it with the rod itself?

Not really, you just need to be careful when the rod gets close to the crank. After the rings clear, you tap lightly while guiding the rod to the crank journal.
