P0306. Came on this morning, noticed a SLIGHT hesitation as I pulled away.
Bosch platinums almost 60,000 kms, I was hoping to get another year, but hey I got almost 3 out of them!
Guess I get to put in Autolites or Ford plugs now. Should do the leads too, although I did do them when the plugs were done, bad leads might do the same thing. I'm hopeful that there is nothing else wrong, otherwise the Vulcan engine runs like a clock. Warmed up under full load there is no misfire, only appears from morning cold start.
Kinda glad it is not something too expensive. I was quite surprised that the ECU could sense that small of a misfire. It could only be felt for about 2-3 seconds while pulling away cold. As soon as the engine has partly warmed up, it smooths out completely.
Didn't you just show us some 300KM plugs that had about 0.1" gaps? How did they run?
The point is, with the high voltage ignition system used in the Aerostar, it's pretty hard for the plug itself to misfire. More likely something else causing it, like the wires, or insulation on the coil pack.

How true. A couple of years ago I replaced some spark plugs on a Winstar that had the original plugs. They made it to 254K miles. Yep, that's 254,000 miles before they were replaced. The owner had a CEL condition that was caused by a vacuum leak and the plugs were replaced because the owner said to "do it while you are in there".
Any of you ever see some of those "surface gap" plugs that some marine engines use? That's what some of these looked like.
I guess that just proves that the original Motorcraft plugs are pretty good.

Yeah, could be ...... but all plugs are not created equal. I think the fine wire platinums from Bosch are too delicate (electrode area being very small) for an ignition system like used on the Aero. Mustang had the same problem & guess what plugs were in it? I was really careful when re-routing the plug leads too, but maybe the rear plug did not screw home correctly or some other slight problem. I'll be finding out on the W/E.
Another point, does not matter how high the ignition system voltage is, if the spark does not jump across the electrode gap, engine will misfire. Maybe some debris build up or a failed plug even.
don't forget the fuel injector and it's wiring
the OBDII 3L is SFI
if the plugs and ign. wire looks fine, run a bottle of Regane Concentrate or Large Veh. or the expensive Chevron Techron Plus, contains polyetheramine, the best injector cleaner on the market.
most gasoline bulk operator wholesalers have cut back on the cleaning additives to the bare minimum or less to meet gov. specs because of low wholesaler margins
may have also got a tank of contaminated gas. diesel contamination is common
Well I've cleared the CEL, filled the tank with new gas put a bottle of Inj cleaner into the tank & so far no misfire. However this did occur with the terrible wet & thunderstormy weather which has been hanging around Ontario now for about a month or more. Even the grass is perfectly green ! I'm thinking bad condensation or other wetness throughout the entire ignition circuit could have caused such a problem somewhere? I even had the inside of the vehicle steam up when the sun came out! (The van never smells wet or musty).
