I was at the ford dealer yesterday, they allready had some 09 escapes. At a closer look I noticed they have a new 4 cylinder, the 2.5 duratec. It has 171 hp and 171 foot pounds. Of course I had to test drive it. The thing was very peppy, surprisingly so. It felt strong when you mashed the skinny pedal. The ranger should get this motor as well. A ranger with the 2.5 and a manual tranny would romp, it would be like a truck sports car. The bottom line is, I was very impressed with the 2.5 duratec and hope it finds it's way into the ranger as I'm sure it will. The 4 banger is catching up to the 3.0 in power, but has the mpg of a 4 cylinder. Ford might as well drop the 3.0 with that potent 4 cylinder.
Used to drive european ford cars with duratecs. Good engine, but seems to me noghtmare to rebuild like an DOHC. I like Mercedes V6/V8 OHV engines with one camshaft and 4 valves per cylinder. 6 ore 8 cyl heads easy to remove and change gasket. Really they have 5 valves per cyl. one is oil pressure solenoid contreolled decompression valve letting Enone ecu turn some cylinders off to save fuel under low load conditions. Unfortunatly engines of this design are used on commertional trucks only. For cars and SUVs they offer DOHC (+ expencive maitenence).

I hope it hits the Ranger too.
I have a 2005 Escape with the 2.3 Duratech and 5speed. Real zippy and great MPG. The 2.5 is actually supossed to get 1MPG better than the 2.3.
Yeah, it's kind of cool, every new motor that comes out is bigger and get better mpg than the one before it. With the ranger 4 cylinder making 171 hp and 171 foot pounds, there's no excuss not to let us have a 4x4 ranger with the 4 cylinder. They had 3.0 4x4's and now the 4 cylinder is matching it's output.
So what is the scoop men on the Ranger? I have been wanting to replace my old 87 but cant swing it now. Im hopeing for next year. Is it going to be around for a few more years? Im just looking for a cheap 2wd. Will there be any huge changes? Thanks Joe
No ford isn't bringing the euro ranger over. Ford is designing a new world ranger for release in 2012. The same ranger will be sold world wide, that will mean crew cabs and diesels for us like everyone else.
