My PSD A/C is fine but I have a daily driver I need help with. The car is a 1999 Ford Escort ZX2 Sport with the 4 cylinder. The A/C does not work. Tried adding R134A, no luck. My mechanic says it is the compressor. If I choose to change this myself, what all do I need to consider?
First thing is to get the service manual and peruse it to see if you have the proper equipment and are up to the new challenge.
I'd also get a second opinion. You never know, that mechanic might have a boat payment due and he selected you to make it for him even though all the car might need is a simple or inexpensive repair.
You can get that help here if you have the capability to follow directions and use some basic diagnostic test equipment (gauge set, multi-meter, etc).
Before you buy any parts like a compressor, check the warrany; some require specific parts to be changed also and certain procedures to follow or you'll eat a bad compressor.
I semi-frequently go over with topic with people/customers that get the Firestone/Pepboy or other $12 an hour expert that declares the whole system shot. In modern car A/C systems the compressor rarely goes bad, though when it gets replaced the problem gets solved.
Why?
The new ones come with a new $50 clutch. Run the vehicle and briefly jumper the clutch with fuses leads to see if it clicks and engages.
I would also check to make sure it is not the presure cylcle switch.Pull the conector off and jumper acros the leads if the clutch cycles your switch is bad.I have replaced the switch in my RANGER three times in seven years. Most auto parts stores have them for about $25.
