I have a 1994 F250 Powerstroke with 174,000 miles on it. I have never replaced the alternator, and I am concerned that sooner or later this thing is going to go.
I drive the truck into some extremely remote areas here in Oregon. 70 - 100 miles from the nearest town, not to mention the nearest dealership.
I am wondering what everyone else here thinks - am I worrying about nothing - or is 8 years and 174,000 miles a reasonable time to do some preventive maintenance. Also - replace the regulator too ??
Maybe drop by the Garage & Tool tip forum.
Look in the thread called:" What do you keep in your trucks for tools & parts" or something like that.
I have an area for storage of things in the back of my truck under the canopy.
I have these ready and waiting for use if needed.
Water pump & gasket,fuel pump & gasket,Alternator,Voltage Reg,Air Filter,Fuel Filter,Oil Filter,Power Steering Pump & Hoses,Fan Belts,Rad Cap,Starter Solenoid,& of course all fluids the truck uses.
What????? No Ignition Control Module????? No merit badge for you!!!! Just kidding, obviously..... I'm sure you probably have a distributor back there, too. Gotta hate being left on the roadside.
Sheesh, and I thought *I* was bad... heh. Y'all just should carry an extra engine in the back with a cherry picker I carry an extra battery in addition to most of the stuff already mentioned. Good to have the extra parts on-hand, and it's nice to be able to help other folks on the side of the road.
The irony is ,I've repaired at least 10 GM cars on the highway and yet I have never had to do any emergency repair to my truck except replace a fuel pump in Osoyoos BC in 1992 and replace a wheel stud in a campground in Salmon Arm BC in 1997.
That's it.
Two weeks ago I broke down 3 times in one trip with the Buick out in the boonies too.
I had to manufacture a thermostat gasket of a throw away Camera packaging. My wife was quite impressed, even moreso when I wished for water and 2 minutes later a guy came along that was bringing drinking
water out to his sister's farm which was down the roada 1/4.
I sometimes ask myself why I buy and CAA (AAA) membership every year.
A million things could go bad with 174,000 miles on her.How practical is to have all of those parts? I would get a good alternator and stash it in the truck. I wouldn't change it though, if it has gone this far it must have been well designed and assembled. Go for the record! Maybe you can e-mail us 6 yrs from now about its 260,000 mile mark. I would get a good CB and cell phone in that truck, for trips into the boondocks.
