I heard there might steering gearbox rebuild kits out there. I need to rebuild my sisters since she doesnt have the money to buy a new one. Anyone give a shout about this please.
I've never heard of DIY steering box kits. The bearing and seals are probably all press fit and have very tight tolerances. It would be beyond the average weekend wrench turner in both tools and knowledge so the return/issue rate would be high for the retailer and the manufacture.
Yeah, I hear ya about just buying a reman but I have tools for pressing. I am aware of all the stuff that entails this being that I have been in school for going on 4 years for regular vehicles to semi trucks and being that I have my own business on the side. I am not a noob but nor am I a guru yet. Just some procedures are cumbersome to do, but the knowledge is the key like you said though ReAx. I will see whats rollin' around in the aftermarket here in a couple days if I dont have a parts book for steering gear.
Well the steering works probably 20% of the time. Even when it works you still have to muscle it to turn the rig. Yeah, the steering gear isn't a complex machine its just a small tight quartered unit. If I knew how many parts were & configuration in the process of this thing while its working and a picture I am sure I could have figured out the problem.
But you say the spool valve is what generally goes first Krewat?
Not that I can hear when I drive it. My sister told me it squeaks from time to time only turning left which I am sure that isnt the steerting unless the drag links are drastically dry. The pump not pumping enough pressure you mentioned seems to be more reasonable of an assumption at the moment.
I checked the fluid level and that is full so its either the pump or gearbox. I Checked a trustworthy auto store I shop at for hard to find things and they list 2 GATES Kits for rebuilds of the gearbox. The Pitman shaft kit is part #348361 and the Input shaft kit is #350900.
Question: Does the steering get noticably harder when you step on the brakes? The brake booster uses power steering fluid for power in the diesels. This MIGHT point towards a weak pump. Or a hydroboost unit that's using all the power.
I just don't know. I'd wait to hear from others on this...
At times it does get quite hard when braking and turning is occurring at the same time. Other times its not as hard if at all when braking & turning happens simultaneously.
