ground in charging system-help plz
up and my charging system is seeming to overcharge
while driving and drain dead when the truck is parked overnight.
i have bought and installed a new alt and vlt regulator.
i have inspected the wiring harness to the alt and found no probs.
i cant seem to find the problem. i hooked a test light inbetween
the neg. term. and the neg cable and pulled every fuse. (hoping
to find the circuit that is grounded- no luck).
could it be in the starter? i do have headers and no heat shield
for the starter. could it also be the isolation relay for the
aux battery? geez im confused.
thanks in advance

terminal off of the starter selinoid (sp).
the one that goes to the alt! i replaced the
alt. can you explain where in the heck that
circiut jumpers off to? it seems to split
into the voltage reg. and then just off into
the wiring harness. do you know where it goes to?
thanks for helping me! im so glad i found this
web site.
I havent ever seen the ammeter cause charging problems.....but anything is possible.
My best guess is the voltage regulator, just becasue it is new doesnt mean it is good so get it tested (usually for free at most Parts Stores). It controls charging and is turned on/off by the ignition switch. So if it was staying on there could be a current draw.
Try pulling the plug off the regulator and see if your test light goes out.
Another possibility is a bad radio noise suppresssion capacitor, it is the little metal cylinder bolted on or next to the voltage regulator and should have one yellow or black wire running from it to the regulator plug.
Unbolt the capacitor and insulate it from any metal, if the light goes out replace the capacitor.
Good luck.
