The first thing you need to do is spec out what you want/need and are looking for. Do you level bass or do you want to be one of those people who can share one frequency for 500 yards? Do you know how/want to build a ported box or can you be happy with a sealed box? Again, I like the flat response and ease of building a sealed box offers.
Sealed boxes are usually smaller too. My build is 15" tall, 7.5" base and 3.5" across the top, with an angled face. Then adjust the length to the volume you need and stuff it full of poly fill (pillow filler).
With any sub setup you will need an amp, here is where you can spend most of your money. Since you are powering the sub, you might consider powering the mids and highs as well. You can pick up 4,5 and 6 channel amps or you can power them separately. I once had a beautiful little 400 watt Crossfire that ran a pair of Fosgate Q-Components and a pair of 12" subs. I also had a cheap little crossover so I could tune it a little. Channel 1 ran RF speaker, Channel 2 ran LF speaker, and 3/4 bridged to 200 watts and ran the subs in parallel.
I am currently considering Infinity and RF for my current truck, I was going to do MBQuart but I heard they were bought out by a company that might not keep the quality up.
a little pricey at 115 shipped but its worth every penny and compaired to crutchfield its 199 and thats not including shipping
