Rear end problems

I have a 1997 F-150 4x4 XL with just over 130,000 miles on it. About 3 weeks ago the rear end went out on it. I purchased the extended warranty so the repair was covered. However when I got home I tried out the 4 wheel drive and it felt like I was turning hard and "groaned" but I was barley moving. Then I checked to see if they even put a limited slip rear end in it. Of course not!( Jacked up one side and the wheel spun easily) My question is will I damage anything by normal driving until I can get this corrected? By the way the axle code on the door sticker is H9. And I know it was limited slip before due to the marks in my yard. Any help greatly appreciated.

H9 is a 3.55 LS unit. I dont understand the part about turning hard and groan, but i dont see how you can hurt an axle by not having your LS unit installed. Just take it back , when time and tell them.

If the gear ratios are not the same, when in 4 wheel drive there would be problems?

If you had a shudder in a limited slip, it could need the friction modifier. My 2001 LS was doing that on some turns, I put the modifier in and in about 100 or so miles the noise and shudder was gone. However, if it's not a limited slip, it shouldn't have shudder and the modifier won't help.

What parts did they replace? It sounds like the wrong ratio ring and pinion. A different ratio front to rear will cause the transfer case to bind up when put in 4 wheel drive. In 2 wheel drive it will drive without any problems.

That def sounds like a different ratio then the front diff. Look on the worksheet and see what ratio ring gear they put back in there.

Unfortunately the warranty company purchased the part, the dealer installed it and all it says on my copy of the repair order is "axle assembly". They bought a junkyard axle with a rear end and put it in my pickup! It wasn't a LS rear end but they said it was correct the gear ratio. All I know the 4 wheel drive is acting funny like I described before. Anyone know if when a rear end goes out while driving could other problems arise from this? Like trans, or 4 x 4 systems? Thanks for the info so far. Oh, the warranty company ordered another part and is sending it to my local Ford dealership, not where I purchased the vehicle. Maybe they can get it right,

You might want to ask the dealer if they pulled the cover to verify the axle ratio or went by the tag on the outside. If you had LS in the original, they should have put one with LS back in. It sounds like the warranty company is going cheap at your expense.

+1 on the R and P. If it were me, I would teach them a lesson. Put it in 4 low and break it. See what they think about the whole drive line getting repaired. Definatly would not drive it in 4WD, you are putting ALOT of undo stress on the whole truck.
