I recently bought a 94 F150 4X4 302 automatic, truck runs really well and gets good gas mileage, 15 to 19 depending on driving conditions..... now for the down side, around town tranny works great, no slipping, smooth shifts but at highway speeds it shutters and and shifts hard into overdrive, also if I let off the gas even at higher speeds it down shifts most of the time. Fluid level is good, very clean and no burnt smell..... where do I start?
I had a similiar problem only mine was the reverse of yours. My would shift hard at lower speeds. For me it comes and goes. I also didnt know where to start lookin for a problem.
Thanks for the replies, I just crawled under and counted bolts.....14, so I guess it's a AOD, I'll check error codes and see what I come up with........ I know nothing about automatic trans....... my other truck has a ZF 5 speed.
My 92 f150 4x4 302 aod is doing the same thing. I have been told by quite a few people that it is the torque converter. i am going to have mine replaced in the very near future and I will let you know if it cures the problem or not. Best of luck
reino134, thanks for the reply. There's a really good shop near by...... never used them, but almost everyone I've asked recommends them highly....... let you know what they have to say.
i would appreciate that! i priced around yesterday and it looks like anywhere from $700 - $850 to have a shop do it in my area. Im really tempted to do it myself for that kind of money. Let me know what you find out on yours....
reino134, I went by the tranny shop earlier today..... he thinks it's the torque converter also. He recommended changing the fluid, filter, and adding something he sells called No Shutter??? worth a try I guess..... let you know how it works out.

Just did mine myself. Converter was $350 (billet), pump seal was like 10 bucks, and it drank down about 14 quarts of ATF ($40+), and I bought lunch for the friend that helped me ($15). Took both of us about 8 hrs total. Thing is we had a trans jack (available for $120something shipped at harbor freight) and it was completely worth its weight in gold. Would have taken us twice as long without it.
Plus, now I have a fun new transmission jack that I can do captain morgan poses with.
Did you seperate the transfer case or drop it all as one unit? I saw the tranny jacks in harbor freight's catalog also! Just trying to figure out what to do with it after the job is done, your idea sounds good though. Did the swap clear up the shuttering?
gweeds, I have a very strong not so smart friend I work with.......he'd help do about anything for a free trip to Chinese buffet. How easy does the transmission jack roll.... Capt Morgan poses look a LOT better if your moving.....
Iantiler,
I just pulled the vacuum line off of the egr valve, or EVP capped it and took my truck for a ride. I had no shutter or clunking at all. I have already replaced the EGR valve, the EGR Valve position sensor, the EGR control solenoid, and all the vacuum lines. The one shop I talked to said that the shutter could be one of two things. The Torque Converter, or a problem with the EGR system. If anyone else has any ideas why this would go away by keeping the EGR from functioning I'm all ears.....

I dropped them both as a unit, because I just did not want to mess with the xfer case. It was a really heavy, large unit. The most difficult part is re-aligning the tranny to the block. I found out the cement slab that I did it on had shifted over the years and sloped to one side by less than a degree. Once I took out the last bolt the whole assembly just started rolling untill the bell housing hit the frame, as you see in the picture... So yes, it rolls...
EDIT: I had no shutter before, So I cant really say if I fixed it or not...
