Post Fuel Guage Wiring Question

I have a '78 F250 4x4 with a non working fuel guage. Upon inspection I found that both wires were broken at the tank. I found where the green wire went, but not the black one. Is it a ground, or will I blow up my truck, or what? Help!

You got'er right The green goes to the guage and the black is a ground.
