Hello, just pulled into hotel in Harper's Ferry WV for the night and noticed a fuel leak. Slow dripping off bellhousing, best I can see from below with poor light is it's coming from rear of left (d/s) cylinder head area. Fuel lines look dry from below. Can't see anything from up top (didn't pull anything apart).
We're 300mi from home, but have a full set of tools etc. Any advice on likely sources or best way to locate leak? Looks close to exhaust header, so I don't want to drive too far (if at all).
Any thoughts on a good local shop would be appreciated also. Near Charles town, Summit Point, etc.
May be the fuel line on the back of the head is leaking, may be lose or cracked. I thought someone talked about it it an earler post, can't remember! And wecome to FTE....
look down into the valley of the motor.if there is a leak up top..it will pool and then spill out a weep hole in the back of the motor on the passanger side and drip down from there...if there is a pool..check around your filter cover for wet spots...if thats ok it could the drain vlave on the back of the fuel bowl..here is a how to on that Separator Valve Rebuild
there is also two 1/4 inch lines off of the fuel bowl (standing in front of truck it is on the left side of the bowl down low) one will go to the driver side head up front.. the other goes to passanger side rear of the head..look for a leak at the bowl..
if the valley is dry then i would say its the 1/4 inch fuel line going into the back of the passanger side head.. mine would only leak after it warmed up a bit but you can see from under the truck...if it leaks the o ring part # from IH is 685158c1... when you put this back together..do not tighten tight..its rubber and you can trash it fast..tighten till you feel it hit the o ring... then give it just a little more to make it seal....
Thanks to all for the advice. The 1/8" pipe plug at the rear of the left head was weeping fuel...a 1/2 turn tightening stopped leak. Now home, will remove plug and replace and reseal.
Is this common? Should I be worried about the condition of the threads in the head? Anyone know if the plug is iron or brass? Thanks.
Pop has the info on the o-rings you can get at home depot or just about any other hardware store.
They are a quick temp fix until you can get the oil resistant ones in there.
Pop has a list of sizes that includes the type of material needed, but Home Depot etc. will typically not have the Viton o-rings. If you start just putting Buna rings in some locations, the leak will re-appear in short order. Other times, like his end plug repair, you can get by with the HD version, but that had to do more with the lock tite than the O-ring according to Pop.

I've heard that guy knows his stuff. He's really good at "how to" instructions with pictures.
