cold air intake?

I have a holley 600cfm carb. Have a lot of ideas and options going on and one that pops in my head is this. Most of the current production vehicles keep the air intake away from the engine. Is there a benefit to keeping the intake away from the hot engien? Also is there a system I haven't found yet that hooks up to a carburator?

Thanks

There are no cold air intakes made for classic F series trucks. The benifit on other high performance cars is that the colder the air, the more dense, and the more fuel you can pump in for more HP. I don't think a cold air intake should be at the top of your list of upgrades anyways, just get a nice K&N filter with an X-stream top, then i think your air intake system will be the best it can be.

I don't think it's going to make a massive difference, but if you want to add one for the sake of engineering/tinkering go for it. I'd look at some of the mid to late 70s cars/trucks that had air cleaners with that corrugated tubing that ran to the radiator support. That's essentially doing the same thing. You've got to plumb in cool air from either the front or the fenderwell to an enclosed air cleaner, not an open one like most aftermarket ones. The challenge may be finding an enclosed air cleaner that is still large enough to allow a good air volume as most are not very tall to fit under the hood. Might be something on a medium duty truck that would work. The upside to your junkyard scavenging is that most carb tops use the same air cleaner opening diameter.

Cone filters won't work for a number of reasons, but one big one is you'd probably need at least 2 to have the same amount of air flow of the original filter. They are really made for smaller imports.

The '64 Thunderbolts had them, they took out the two inboard headlights and ran flexible ducting to the air cleaner. The advantage on these cars was that they ran fast enough to gain some "natural supercharging" effect of the high pressure air coming into the ducts at high speeds. It is likely your slick won't be driven fast enough to take advantage of this phenomenon. Crites Restorations has repro T-Bolt parts. Crites Restoration - Parts List By Model
