wheel lug stud

I have a stripped wheel stud on the rear of my truck. What is the best way to remove it. I just noticed that DC has replacements.
Thanks in advance.

Hello ssj7kids

The correct way is to remove the axle and have it pressed out but… The correct way is also expensive and a bit of a pain in the rear-end…

What I do is place a brass drift punch on the stud after removing the wheel and give it a good sharp pop with a hammer a couple times and the stud drops out.

Place a new stud in the hole and get an old lug nut and coat the threads with anti seize. Then add a few washers and place the lug nut on the stud with the flat side in… then use a half-inch drive breaker bar with the correct size socket and tighten the nut until it pulls the new stud into place. Put some grease between the washers and go slowly.

Do Not use an air tool for this! It will in some cases either stripe the new threads or break the new stud.

Ya only have to do this once so take your time and do it once. ;-)

Thanks, I WAS / am, trying to avoid taking the axle out. Would soaking it with penetrating oil for awhile help? I'm in no rush, I still have a naked frame.

I've had good luck in the past by heating the axle around the stud a bit, then taking an air hammer to the stud. You've got to replace it anyway, so it isn't a big deal if it gets messed up a bit more.

I've done quite a few of these. To remove them, I simply put a nut on the end of the lug, so that a few of the threads are turned but not to expose the lug out of the nut. Then take a heavy hammer and smack it a few times. It'll come loose regardless if you used a lubricant/ loosener. The lubricant will help but its just added mess to clean up. Once you have the lug out, replace it with a new one. Here, I put a couple large nuts over the threads of the lug, then put the lug nut with a washer on the end of the lug. I always use an impact here. It makes the job so easy. I've never stripped a lug yet using an impact. Use the impact and pull the lug to seat it. Your done!.

THANKS all....
I did simply put penetrating oil on it everytime I walked past the last couple of days and then it just popped out with about 2 blows with a big hammer...
